Look, I wanted a chill, casual place for dinner in Kyoto, and this was within walking distance from my hotel. Around us are a litany of restaurants that were priced much higher, so in truth I came here because of reasonable prices.
The decor is unassuming and simple, with small tables and individual booths, wood partitions and white walls. Not crowded either, so it's a great place to relax. The menu promises a fresh seafood experience with the option to customise each topping to your liking.
The boss was friendly and polite, and spoke some English too. He was extremely accommodating to my vegetarian wife, and prepared something off-menu: onsen egg on rice with miso soup.
I ordered the Luxury Rice Bowl (item 21) and it was delicious! Nine types of fresh seafood served on hot rice with spring onion and seaweed strips. The seafood was sweet and tender, and went well with soy sauce and wasabi. Each bite was wonderful until the last.
The damage was just ¥2640 for my seafood bowl. This is tremendous value because something similar back home would be priced at least double. You can order drinks too or just have water free of charge.
All in all, an unforgettable experience. Thank you for the amazing food, and serving...
Read moreWe had such a delicious meal here. The fish was so fresh, flavourful, and tasty. Our family tried the tonkatsu and a few different rice bowls. We loved it so much that we ordered an extra rice bowl afterwards - there was an option to customize and choose exactly what kind of fish and seafood to put on top of the rice. It was our favourite meal we had during our visit to Japan. My husband also felt the tonkatsu was the best he'd ever had. Our older 2 kids told the staff that it was their favourite meal of their whole lives!!!
Even though we don't speak Japanese, we were able to order through their picture menu and using google translate. The restaurant is a bit tucked away, in...
Read moreTucked away in an underground location, Kaisen Tokidoki Buta is great for a quick and flavorful bite, especially if you’re craving seafood rice bowls. We tried the pork and fried fish bowls. The rice was warm and fluffy, and the pork came with a sweet soy glaze that tasted just like rich char siu. The fried fish was crispy and paired with a nice sweet-sour dipping sauce. While the flavors were satisfying, the bowls are heavy on rice with very little protein and no vegetable options. Ideal for a snack or light meal, but not a full, balanced one.
