If you're a fan of matcha, Sawawa Japanese Matcha Sweets in Kyoto's vibrant Nishiki Market is a must-visit. This charming shop specializes in matcha-infused treats, offering a delightful array of desserts that showcase the rich flavors of Uji matcha.

Nestled in the heart of Nishiki Market, Sawawa is easily identifiable by its green-themed signage and inviting atmosphere. The shop is divided into two levels: the first floor showcases a variety of matcha sweets, while the second floor houses a cozy café where patrons can indulge in their treats.

One of the standout offerings is the matcha warabimochi, a delicate bracken starch jelly infused with matcha. Its soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture and rich matcha flavor make it a favorite among visitors. Another highlight is the matcha parfait, layered with matcha ice cream, red bean paste, and other delightful components, providing a harmonious blend of flavors.

Sawawa prides itself on using high-quality matcha sourced from Uji, ensuring an authentic and robust flavor profile in every dessert. The staff are friendly and attentive, enhancing the overall experience. While the shop can get crowded, especially during peak hours, booking tickets in advance is recommended to secure a spot at your preferred time.

Whether you're a matcha enthusiast or a casual dessert lover, Sawawa Japanese Matcha Sweets offers a delightful experience that captures the essence of Kyoto's rich culinary heritage. Don't miss the opportunity to savor their exquisite matcha creations during your visit to...

The girl who works there with the eyelids full of mascara smears was extremely rude. The sign said they accept visa but my husband pulled out 1000yen and I told him they take visa so he put it back and handed her a Visa card. She threw it back him and said no visa. What was more disgusting is that she reached her hand out closed to his wallet and wanted to take her yen from his wallet? Excuse me? Both of us were so shocked. Japan are known for their polite and respectfulness but this girl was on a different spectrum. Anyways, I pointed at the sign said you guys said take visa, she told me no visa cash only. I then pointed at the sign visa and asked her what’s this then and she finally took the visa instead. Definitely will never come back to this shop and won’t recommend to family and friends who are gonna be in town. Disgusting service, such a disgrace...

This is one of many good places inside the Nishiki Market, which is basically a few blocks of shops that collective sell seafood, seasoning, dried food, and snacks. This particular place is famous for their matcha (powdered green tea) snacks, and has a café area upstairs). We went up for tea and snacks, including their famous green tea warabi mochi (bracken-starch dumplings). If you love green tea, you’ll want to try some of this. The hojicha parfait was excellent. The houjicha tea came with a card in Japanese explaining how long to brew that tea. I don’t recommend trying the powdered green teas (matcha) if you can’t stand the bitterness.
