Wagyu Volcano-Steak OAGARI, Arashiyama — Restaurant in Kyoto

We visited Wagyu Volcano OAGARI around 2pm for a late lunch and were pleasantly surprised to find the restaurant completely empty—a hidden gem tucked away from the tourist crowds with a beautiful view of the river. Despite the absence of other diners, the ambience was clean, serene, and refreshingly unscented for a place specialising in grilled wagyu. The efficient ventilation and pristine setup spoke volumes about the establishment’s attention to detail.

Ordering is done seamlessly via a digital menu system, making the entire experience efficient and hassle-free. The staff were warm, professional, and courteous—making us feel welcomed without being intrusive.

We ordered the most affordable wagyu donburi on the menu, alongside a set of five pieces of wagyu aburi sushi. And let me say: this was easily one of the most memorable meals I’ve had in Japan.

The wagyu don arrived beautifully plated, featuring tender, marbled slices of beef over a bed of perfectly steamed rice, topped with a luscious onsen tamago (hot spring egg). The rich, umami-laden beef melted in the mouth, and when combined with the subtle creaminess of the egg and the optional addition of dashi broth poured over it (ochazuke-style), it transformed into something deeply comforting—soul food at its finest.

However, the highlight was undoubtedly the wagyu aburi sushi. Each piece was a one-bite revelation: lightly torched to coax out the marbled fat, then finished with a delicate brush of tare sauce. The balance of smoky char, soft rice, and unctuous wagyu created a perfect harmony—decadent yet refined. I could have easily eaten another five.

This restaurant might not be the most talked-about in Arashiyama, but it absolutely deserves more attention. Whether you’re a wagyu connoisseur or just looking to try something special in a relaxed setting, Wagyu Volcano OAGARI delivers a remarkable culinary experience without the crowd...

Food is what you would expect for this price range - good ingredients, reasonable taste and good presentation.

Service is a mess, atmosphere is not particularly welcoming.

Menu is confusing, staff don't answer any questions and you have to self-order using an app, which is odd for the price.

Seats by the window are reservation-only which is fair enough, though we were there for over an hour and no one was seated there the whole time we were there.

I am highly confused and disappointed that they insisted we sit all the way in the back at the counter, given it was early and the restaurant only had 5 other people seated. Also not the best look when Japanese customers arriving after us were being seated towards the front of the restaurant.

They also messed up the bill, giving us someone else's bill for a different...

This is hands down the absolute best halal food in Japan. I spent two weeks in Japan and as a Muslim, halal option is pretty limited. I found this place on tiktok. Didn't have much expectation but when I took that first bite, I was blown away. The wagyu is so tender and flavourful. Everything works together perfectly. I ordered the volcano wagyu with cooked egg. I wish I ordered raw egg but as I'm in another country, I didnt want to risk anything. My friend ordered the raw egg and hers looked amazing too. She enjoyed it as much as I did. A must must try in Japan. There's also a prayer room next to the shop. I ate my meal while enjoying the view of Hozugawa river. Please continue your quality. I want to visit...
