Unagi Nishimoto, a historic restaurant in Nagoya with over 90 years of tradition, is a true gem. Renowned for its exceptional mastery of eel cuisine passed down through generations, the restaurant also offers a dining environment meticulously designed to provide comfort and tranquility.
Before entering our private room, we passed through a stunning garden with a koi pond. The colorful koi fish gliding gracefully in the water and the beautifully landscaped surroundings immediately set a serene and elegant tone for our visit. This tranquil scene added a sense of charm and poetry to the entire experience.
Once seated in the private room, the ambiance was intimate and peaceful, enhanced by views of the courtyard garden. The historic architecture exuded a warm, rustic charm, with its wooden details and traditional Japanese design, evoking the elegance and serenity of the Showa era.
The highlight, of course, was the food. Their signature unagi (eel) dish was impeccable—grilled to perfection with a crispy exterior and tender, juicy interior. The rich yet balanced sauce elevated each bite, delivering an unforgettable taste experience. Even the accompanying side dishes and soup reflected meticulous attention to quality and flavor.
Dining at Unagi Nishimoto was not just a culinary delight but a full immersion into Japanese culture and tradition. From the koi pond and garden to the exquisite food, every detail showcased the beauty of a legacy built over nine decades. Highly recommended for anyone who loves Japanese cuisine—this is a place truly...
Read moreThis has to be one of the best Unagi places in Japan. I had the standard Unagi Don (うなぎ丼) at lunch on a public holiday. It was a little crowded even at 1:30PM. We needed to wait for only 15 minutes. The portions are on the small size and the price is a little on the high side. However, you will not find a better taste. It is absolutely worth the extra effort to get there and to indulge yourself. The flavors are rich and sensual at the same time. The Unagi is char grilled the traditional way and has a very deep smokey charcoal flavor. The accompanying sauce is an enhancer, not a distraction. Although I would have liked a little more sauce over the rice. For most, it should be perfection. The place is easy to get to via public transportation. The #1 bus from Nagoya Station stops directly out front. The #2 from Sakae stops around the corner. Inside you will find a very old looking, yet well kept traditional Japanese restaurant. There are tables and tatami map seating. As of this review timing, they are about to celebrate their 100th year in business. There's a reason they have been in business for 100 years. Go visit, eat and walk away knowing you have encountered one of the best Unagi experiences of...

This restaurant's was another level above that. The eel skin was crispy while the meat was tender and very flavorful and the rice was well soaked in sauce. The most amazing part was the wonderful garden in the back. We thoroughly...
