Sugi — Restaurant in Nara

Husband and I went last week on our little day trip to Nara. When we stepped into the shop it was like we had gone back in time. Super cute and well decorated place, the man running the shop, an older gentleman, was super nice and ushered us in. We are both English speakers, so we couldn’t read the menus, but the kind gentleman directed us to the coffee and egg toast open faced sandwich. It was a simple, yet excellent meal, and the perfect way to start our day. The egg sandwich had cucumber on it (not something we typically do in the states) and it was really yummy and refreshing. The coffee cups were beautiful, literal pieces of art, and we found ourselves bopping to the music which was a retro jazz track. Wife and I went early morning not long after opening. Plenty of seating when we arrived. Decor was very charming and it felt we stepped into a time machine to several decades ago. Owner was an older gentleman and he was very friendly and helpful. Little to no English, so basic Japanese phrases will be very useful. Google Lens translated their tea options very differently / inaccurately. It's roasted green tea. The iced coffee and egg sandwich tasted great 👌.

Inexpensive. Lovely owner. Charming and nostalgic decor. Good tasting food. Definitely recommend this location if you're staying near the Nara Station; it's a fairly short walk. We will visit again in the future if...

This is a charming little cafe with a simple menu and great coffees. Our table really enjoyed the open-faced egg sandwiches. The little side of cream for our coffees came in the tiniest, thimble-sized pitcher I’ve ever seen. It was truly a delight!
