I was originally trying to get away from the hustle of Dotomburi and look for a listening bar in Osaka where they have large vintage JBL, Altec speakers and could enjoy some music played on vinyl or cd’s while sipping on a drink. Instead I found this live Jazz music cafe which is literally in the train station subway of Tanimachi 9 station which is owned by Ro and his wife who run the place, cook/prepare foods and both also play the saxophone beautifully. I was able to listen in on two sessions while I ate their delicious curry rice and enjoyed a Brooklyn lagger then a highball whiskey (a favorite in Japan). Loved the jazzy vibes of this little, quaint cafe and the beautiful live music beautifully played on Sax, standup bass and drums and lovely Altec Valencia speakers hanging. Highly recommend and will definitely go back next time we visit Osaka.

Read moreMy partner and I had a wonderful night at Sub Jazz cafe and we are still talking about it now
The owner is so friendly. He also is formidable at saxophone. He made everyone in the room feel welcome and he has a great sense of humour, he was very funny. We watched him play with a drummer and a cellist. Great to see a female cellist in a jazz band. For the last part of the second set, he brought on stage his two trumpeter friends who had come from other parts of the country to visit him.
The jazz was amazing from start to finish and the trumpeters joining was the cherry on top. It was a really special night and we will remember it forever.
Recommendation: whether you’re a seasoned jazz fan or new to the genre, don’t hesitate to go here. It is a small intimate setting and you will have a...
Read moreThe name of this club is quite literal, as it is located just at the bottom of the stairs leading out of the subway station.
Walking inside transports you to the most intimate little jazz club you will ever find. Space for maybe 12, or 15 if you squeeze in a bit. The drinks are great, and they serve a little selection of sandwiches and muffins to snack on.
The owner/saxophonist/bartender is friendly, and keeps a nice record collection that he plays before, and between sets. Watching him play was an absolute treat. You can see by his expressions while he's on stage that he really loves jazz.
If you romanticize the idea of timeless music in a cozy space, played by people who are passionate about what they do; then I can't recommend this place enough. Just leave me a spot next time...
