Junchan Sushi — Restaurant in Osaka

My partner and I were just walking around the Dontonburi area and found ourselves walking down this alley. The shop front is very unassuming and we were just curious what they served so we opened the door and found a sushi bar! Little did we know it was always last order but the staff and chef still welcomed us loudly and offered us a seat.

We ordered 2 sets of the 10 piece set and an order of the grilled fatty tuna. WOW! Huge portioned pieces of sushi. Every piece was wonderful, my personal favorite was the eel/unagi it was crispy and had a wonderful char that I’ve never had anywhere before. The grilled tuna was amazingly seasoned and so tender. Easily the best sushi we’ve ever had and then the price is the nail in the coffin. It’s cheaper than any sushi we’ve had (NYC, HK) and yet it’s the highest of quality and taste. I don't know what the food is like here. We waited outside for 20 minutes, there were two groups of two ahead of us, whom they seated, then they told us they were sold out. I don't know if there was a way they could have known that before letting us wait. It was already late for dinner around 9 PM. We would have been upset if they didn't have what we wanted, so I guess it was a no-win situation either way. Prices were intimidating (for me as a budget traveler) but if you want excellent sushi in Dotonbori, you'll certainly get your money's worth, and actually ends up being somewhat lighter on the wallet than expected.

The chef and hosts are very attentive and friendly, and the fish arrives quickly and in thick slices. I recommend the salmon; buttery rich, deep orange, and melts in your mouth!
