For most people who are planning a trip to Osaka, they will undoubtedly add the Gilco Man at Dotonbori and Universal Studio and the jolly clown Kuidaore Taro into their sightseeing and exploration itinerary.

Almost every traveler knows or hears about the huge billboard of the Glico Man running on a sky blue race rack. It is hung at a building along the Dontonbori river overlooking the forever busy Dontonbori bridge. Locals and tourists swamped the bridge and took pictures with the Gilco Man which is said to be an unofficial mascot of Dontonbori (not confirmed).

Let’s talk about the historical facts of this famous landmark in Osaka: Gilco, the Japanese food manufacturer of Pocky and Pretz first erected this Gilco Man advertisement billboard in 1935. Pretz and Pocky have become kids favorite snacks since they were introduced in 1963 and 1966 respectively.

The Glico Man's joyful appearance and its running pose have become an iconic image of energy and happiness. This landmark billboard has captured the hearts of Osakans and tourists alike for 84 years since it first erected in 1935. Almost no one can resist the temptation of not taking a photograph or a selfie with the Gilco Man at Dontonbori. It can be said that a tourist has not been to Osaka if they return home without a symbolic photo or selfie with the Gilco Man.

The Gilco Man billboard will be lit up 30 minutes after sunset every night. This lighting up definitely adds flare to the already sumptuously beautiful night scene at Dontonbori.

Apart from posing at the usual photo spot on the bridge, you can try out several other photo locations: Go up the yellow steps to the viewing platform beside H&M. Or go down the steps to the opposite side of the Gilco Man and take a photo with the full size billboard behind you. Usually this spot is more quiet and less frequented by tourists.

Dotonbori is a lively and exciting place where people can explore numerous restaurants and bars enjoy their gourmet odyssey. When night falls Dontonbori is filled with bright neon signs; the whole area becomes energetic and dynamic with people visiting clubs, bars, and restaurants serving local cuisines.

Shinsaibashi-Suji Shopping Street, a 4 mins walk from the Gilco Man sign, is a well known roofed shopping arcade with a history of 380 years. There are numerous shops for people to satisfy their shopping spree adventure. Shops include western clothing and footwear retailers, fashion boutiques, restaurants and fast food outlets, jewelers, and many more. You can also visit the popular Parco department store and Daimaru department store located near the end of the shopping street. If you are a Pokémon fan, do stop by Pokémon cafe at 9/F Daimaru. Reservation is strongly recommended but it is difficult to reserve a table.

While you are in Dontonbori, spare some time to try the two most popular snacks: okonomiyaki and takoyaki. Osaka is also famous for fried chicken skewers and other fried food, there are plenty of restaurants for you to choose from. Kushikatsu Daruma - Dotonbori (the most popular eatery specializing in fried food) have few branches in Dontonbori and Shinsekai. But the original main shop is at Dontonbori. You cannot miss this restaurant cause you find either long queues in front of the restaurant or the big signature chef figurine positioned outside the restaurant. When the skewer set are served in the counter, you only dip your skewers in the sauce once. This is mainly for hygienic reason. However if you really want to dip the sauce twice, use the lettuce to scoop up some more sauce onto your plate.

Last but not least go shopping at Donki and ride the Ferris wheel for fun. You won’t regret it. Unfortunately the day we went, the Ferris wheel was closed due to routine maintenance. Disappointed.

You can easily spend a whole day exploring, eating and shopping in Dontonbori. Just have fun and...

Review of Dotonbori – Osaka, Japan Overview Dotonbori is Osaka’s most famous entertainment and nightlife district, known for its neon lights, lively atmosphere, and incredible street food. Located along the Dotonbori Canal in the Namba area, this vibrant district represents the energetic spirit of Osaka. With its iconic Glico Running Man sign, giant food billboards, and bustling crowds, Dotonbori is a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Japan’s culinary capital.

History & Significance Dotonbori dates back to the 1600s when it was originally developed as a theater district. Over time, it evolved into a center of shopping, dining, and entertainment. While many of the original theaters are gone, the area retains its reputation as a hub of Osaka’s nightlife and food culture.

Top Attractions in Dotonbori The Glico Running Man & Neon Lights One of the most famous landmarks in Japan, the Glico Running Man sign, has been illuminating the Dotonbori skyline since 1935. Visitors often pose for photos mimicking the runner’s stance, making it one of Osaka’s most iconic photo spots.

Dotonbori Canal & Tombori River Walk The Dotonbori Canal runs through the district, offering a scenic contrast to the neon-lit streets. The Tombori River Walk along the canal is perfect for a leisurely stroll, and boat cruises provide a unique view of Dotonbori’s dazzling lights.

Dotonbori is the kind of place that hits you with color and noise in the best way — neon signs, giant moving billboards (hello, oversized crab and flashy takoyaki octopus), steam rising from street food stalls, and a crowd that’s always in the mood to eat and laugh. It’s cheerful chaos: loud, bright, and endlessly entertaining.

The famous sign The Glico Running Man on the big billboard is the icon everyone snaps. He’s on the Ebisubashi bridge side, arms up like he just finished a race — an instant Osaka postcard. It’s classic neon glamour: the light reflecting off the canal, people posing for photos, and that “I’m in Dotonbori” energy.

How to enjoy it — easy and relaxed Stroll along the canal slowly. Let the smells of takoyaki, okonomiyaki, and grilled meat pull you in. Stand on Ebisubashi bridge for the classic photo of the Glico sign. If you want fewer people in the shot, go early morning or very late at night. Sit down at a restaurant with big windows or at an upstairs terrace to watch the lights and crowd below — it’s a fun people-watching session. Try street food: takoyaki (octopus balls), kushikatsu (fried skewers), and maybe a slice of okonomiyaki. Grab small bites as you walk so you can try lots of things. Take a short canal boat cruise if you want a different perspective of the signs and bridges — relaxing and surprisingly scenic.

Best times & tips Evening is when Dotonbori is most alive — the neon is stunning after dark. For fewer crowds and better photo ops, visit early morning or late night. Weekends and holidays are packed; if you don’t like crowds, aim for a weekday evening. Keep your wallet secure — busy tourist spots attract pickpockets. If you want a quieter vibe, wander the side streets toward Namba and Shinsaibashi; you’ll find calmer cafes and boutiques.

Why it’s great It’s playful and sensory: bright lights, bold flavors, funny signs. It’s easy to tailor: go for a quick snack stop or an entire evening of eating and exploring. It captures Osaka’s friendly, food-first spirit — loud, proud, and delicious.

Walk slowly, taste a little of everything, get a photo with the Glico man, and then keep wandering until you find that perfect stall or terrace to sit and watch the city glow. Perfect for an energetic night out that still feels relaxed if you...
