Tucked away in Sennichimae, Marufuku Coffeeâs main store feels like stepping into a well-kept piece of Osakaâs cafĂ© history. After being turned away elsewhere, our group of four (and one suitcase) sank into the comfort of its spacious seating and unhurried atmosphere.
The menu reads like a love letter to the classics, with enough variety that everyone found a favorite. I went for the seasonal Setonaikai lemon pancake with ice cream, paired with a cafĂ© au lait. The pancake leaned toward the drier side, but came alive with its accompaniments â tangy lemon jam, golden honey, and melting ice cream that kept each bite interesting. The coffee had that deep, slightly bitter character of an old-school kissaten; not my favorite black, but softened beautifully by milk.
Service was warm, if not quick â the wait for dishes was noticeable, but forgivable in a place that invites lingering. Arriving at 9 a.m. meant empty tables, but by the time we left, a line stretched outside. A living relic with charm worth savoring before the day rushes in.

Read moreYesterday we waited about 65 min. for our coffee and morning sandwich set; the sandwiches came first although this is a coffee shop. We were told service will be a bit slow before we went in with a 40 min. wait, which turned out to be over an hour for us. We were also waiting outside in line for about 10 to 15 min. We ended up packing our sandwiches out, because we were to meet a friend and it would take some travel time.
I've been here just about 30 years ago when I lived in Japan and the shop has become more of a tourist destination now. When I first went there around 1993/94 the shop allowed smoking (which I don't miss) and provided hot towels instead of wet wipes; social changes and a cost saving/convenience measure these days I suppose. There were also no sodas as it was really a coffee shop. In years past, the coffee actually came out pretty quickly unlike today where it came out last.
Overall a quaint coffee shop trying to keep the feel/sense of what was, while trying to adapt to today's expectations and desires taking advantage of more recent interest. I wouldn't return unless I can see they are not too busy as it seems they were short on staff and seem to be profitable enough so as not to worry about losing a customer here and there. There are many coffee shops in/around Osaka and I will look for these gems as it will also be a...
