Katsu Curry @ Masara
Was looking around Osaka Station for curry rice cuz I had the craving and found this interesting name. Due to it’s closeness to Masala, I thought it would be Indian but it’s actually Japanese Curry with a twist!
The curry was slightly sweet and meaty, which is par for the demi-glace heavy styles here but there’s another layer to it I can’t seem to describe, which surprised me. It’s also a little tingly, indicating a level of spice. Most curries here don’t have that by default. Something was added here that I like.
The Katsu was great too, crisp breading on tender meat, it felt great to bite into, and with the curry? Amazing.
It’s located within a veeery small nook, where only counter seats are available, the train is also nearby so once in awhile you can hear the whirring and thunking of the train and tracks. This could enhance or take away from the meal but I didn’t like it too much. The space itself was very cosy though. Total cost was 1100...

Tucked away in the cozy maze of Shin-Umeda Shokudo-gai, this tiny curry shop caught my attention with its nostalgic aroma drifting through the alley. The interior is just a simple counter with a few seats — classic, unpretentious, and warmly old-fashioned. It feels like stepping into a small piece of Osaka’s culinary past.
I ordered the beef curry, and while it looked plain at first, one spoonful told a different story. The sauce is mild yet rich, with a beautiful balance of sweetness and spice. Tender chunks of beef melt in your mouth, and the overall flavor feels like a comforting European-style curry from a neighborhood diner. It’s the kind of taste that quietly stays with you — nostalgic, soothing, and deeply satisfying.
The owner is friendly, and the atmosphere is relaxed — locals chatting softly over curry and beer. There’s no rush here, just that familiar Osaka warmth and hospitality.
Among the many famous spots in Shin-Umeda Shokudo-gai, this one stands out not for flashiness, but for its honest flavor and down-to-earth charm. If you want a comforting curry that feels like home, this...
Read moreMy absolute favorite curry place in Japan!! To me, it tastes like a fusion of Japanese-style and Indian style. It’s spicier than Japanese curry, but not as spicy as Indian. There aren’t any veggies in the roux, just beef if you order it. But I always get the katsu-curry (deep-fried pork...
