Mensho Junsai — Restaurant in Takayama

Found this restaurant in the quieter part of the town. I had the udon noodle in beef stew, as well as the hida beef sushi - both were unbelievably delicious

The udon beef stew broth was stunning - exceptionally rich, savoury, and sweet in a non-overpowering most delicuous way possible. It also came with a generous portion of beef, daikon, and vegetables that has soaked up all the delicious broth. The udon noodle itself was also springy and delicious.

I decided to try the hida beef sushi as well, as the signboard outside was advertising it. It was insanely delicious. While it may look simple, the beef was just cooked and tastefully warm. It was also sprinkled with the perfect amount of sesalt, topped with some wasabi and spring onions. Everything came together to give a perfect mouthful.

I had more hida beef from several other stores in the town, but none came close to how...

We tried the beef tendon stew with udon, with soba and a cold udon (tsuke men 🍜 beef soup). Excited to see a menu dedicated to regional specialties - Hida beef, mountain vegetables, handmade soba and udon, mountain yam, eggs etc. The staff was young and upbeat. We came in for a late lunch and had no issue finding a nice bench picnic table sized for 6. This street was less crowded than the two next to it so we decided to try this well-rated establishment. We thoroughly enjoyed the food at Mensho Junsai. This cosy and vibey place had really delicious food! It was such a delight to us (friends and family).

I would highly recommend trying their Hida Beef Tendon Udon and Wild Vegetables Soba. Tempura was amazing too.
