Ranka Coffee — Restaurant in Takayama

We had the most enjoyable afternoon coffee break in this quaint little coffee shop. The interior is like a cottage from the Swiss Alps and adorned with many antiques like their cash register, handmade wooden furniture and wood block floor tiles. We really enjoyed their in-house charcoal roasted premium blend of coffee and espresso. It was smooth and easy drinking with a rich and smokey flavour.

The owners Shunsuke and Saki are so charming and adorable! I enjoyed a great conversation with them talking about the history of the store, the town and their love of Takayama and coffee. They were so kind as to recommend some of the top restaurants in town and even took the liberty of helping us successfully book the highly covered reservations at Ryotei Susaki.

This was truly a memorable experience and meeting Shunsuke, his lovely wife Saki and enjoying drinks in Ranka Coffee was one of our best experiences during our visit...

Ranka coffee is one of the best Japanese kissaten (Japanese cafe) in whole Takayama. Inside an old "kura" a Japanese storage house from the Edo period. Japanese retro pleasant environment in the middle of the famous Sanmachi-suji road in downtown, a space where you can enjoy moments from other times. Coffee, cakes, traditional sweet and tea. Fair prices, CASH ONLY. Not suited for large groups! The staff is very welcoming and speak English. Menu also in English. Free wifi. Toilet with the very helpful "washlet style" inside the shop. Highly recommend!

A cafe at the corner near the famous Hida Takayama old house alleyway. It is in a place with very high traffic yet the inside was very calm. There are Christian motifs and designs at the cafe. As with most establishments in Hida Takayama they have English menu alongside the Nihongo menu. I ordered their blended coffee with cheese toast.
