I've always loved this shop. The kudzumochi sells out fast, sadly... it's fermented arrowroot with sweet soybean powder and black sugar syrup. It's a very understated dessert and it's not sweetened. You have to adjust it by yourself.
The main branch is currently about to reopen after renovations. 3/11/2023 I think. The main branch was getting old so it's good to see the change.
This Atre Ueno branch has younger employees, all whom are very courteous and professional. Some of the main branch staff in the past were quite grumpy, I recall it well.
On a weekday there was a 5-minute line at around 1pm. After 2pm, it was looking like a 30-minute line. Most of the customers are middle-aged or elderly...with the exception of some foreigners or very few young groups.
The red bean is pretty sweet so if you're looking for mildly sweet dessert, this isn't it. I ordered the sweet simmered red beans with white rice balls on top and an additional topping of green tea ice cream. Without the bitter green tea ice cream to accompany it, I would had died!
Even with the bitter green tea ice cream to offset the sweet beans, I could feel my glucose levels skyrocket! Everything you order comes with delicious hot green tea.

There's an English menu. If you're using the chikatoku train discount pass, you can get free toppings, I think? Also with an Atre or JRE card you can get free...
Read moreLocated at atré Ueno, this place serves Japanese desert, Anmitsu dating back to the Meiji era.
We had the signature Anmitsu which contains Anko, Mandarin orange, red beans, brown sugar, agar, Gyuhi. As the name suggest, it is a dessert thus we find it sweet, a tad too sweet for out liking.
They do provide good quality hot green tea and they do top up out cups when it gets low. Shop is filled with locals chilling with their books on their hand and we probably were the only tourist, therefore I believe it is good ( supported by locals ).
Overall a great place, experience for a break and I will definitely be back for more...
Read moreSuper delicious Japanese dessert spot! We went there on Saturday at 2:45pm, and wait time was around 20 min. There were people in the line before us, but totally worth the wait!!
Their signature dish is anmitsu. The dish has jelly and syrup, and matcha ice cream on top. Also, the kuzumochi was amazing. Loved roasted soybean flour on top.
