HARUKA BREADS — Restaurant in Tokyo

I have become a fairly regular customer recently, attracted by the high-quality products, reasonable prices, and personable female staff. This morning, I arrived at 8 o'clock, just as the store opened. On the other side of the street, at a distance from the entrance to the store, stood a man. Another man, whom I assume is the owner of the store, turned the sign to "Open" and unlocked the door. I naturally moved toward the entrance. In no way whatsoever did I push past the man who was on the other side of the street. The owner stood in the doorway, adopted an overbearing stance with a scowl on his face, blocking my way. So I was compelled to wait for the other man to cross the street to enter the shop ahead of me. I felt that the owner of the shop was gratuitously offensive to me. Such oafish behaviour is vanishingly rare in Japan. In fact, as a long-term resident of the country, I have never experienced such behaviour previously. In any event, this person should not be in a customer-facing role and I will never again be a customer at that bakery. I wish to add that I am in my seventies and attach the greatest value to old-fashioned good manners. Perhaps the owner dislikes foreigners, but I have no evidence of that though it remains a possibility. This is the first emphatically negative review I have ever written. I hope it will...

Wenn ich eine Sache auf dieser schönen Welt liebe, dann ist es Brot. Würden morgen die Aliens kommen und mich auffordern sie von der Beauté der Erde zu überzeugen, würde ich ihnen voller Selbstsicherheit einen guten Laib Brot präsentieren. Ich darf mich zudem glücklich schätzen schon die ein oder andere Backware im Ostasiatischen Raum getestet haben zu dürfen, doch mit jeder Probe eines Brotes, wurde Ich, sitzend auf meinem hohen Ross, mit der imaginativen Überlegenheit des deutschen Brotes im Kopf, enttäuscht. Doch nicht hier.

Ich kaufte mir vorgestern gegen 09:00 Uhr morgens ein kleines, noch warmes Brot, jeden Tag, wenn ich seit dem in mein kleines Heim eingekehrt bin, reiße ich ein paar große Krumen ab und schmause an ihnen. Es handelt sich hier bei um diese schönen Beständigkeiten im Alltag, die uns Halt geben und Befriedigung liefern. Dank dieser Bäckerei, habe ich es geschafft, auch tausende von Kilometern entfernt von meiner Heimat, mich ein Stück zu Hause...
