Firstly the positives. Food itself was pretty nice. Good taste! It’s a good looking cafe in general. And the coffee is excellent!!
Let’s stick with the food.. having lived in Japan for nearly ten years, I understand sometimes when getting a sandwich, you only get half a sandwich but when you do it should be substantial size. While the sandwich was nice this ‘set’ meal was not filling at all. The soup I believe was heated in a microwave and came out served a little warmer than room temperature. The Ebi fry was really nice (on the gratin dish) however I believe they were maybe using older oil to cook with. With the combination of the warm AC, and the strong scent of cooking oil our eyes started stinging (I’m not sure if anyone else had this issue). Please note my wife is Japanese, so this isn’t just an opinion of a gaijin. After leaving we noticed our clothes smelt of oil too! However for me the above is not what brings my rating down to a 2*. It’s the depressing feeling the staff portray. 2 out of the 3 workers did not smile once whilst we were there. On a bright sunny Sunday afternoon, a visit to a local cafe should be somewhat energizing and have a feel good factor. This place seriously lacks in this area. I had my 3yo son with me and learnt this cafe is not really a place to bring toddlers as they do not have high chairs nor food that can be consumed for this age child. I feel this is more a ladies lunch type of place. Still has great potential, but I wouldn’t consider returning after...
Read moreAmazing hand-drip coffee with a variety of single-origin in-house roasted beans!! My partner and I travelled from New Zealand (a country well-known for great coffee) to Japan and stumbled upon this cafe near Kamata station, Tokyo (~4min walk). Very impressed and surprised by their superb coffee.
Coffee: We tried the iced versions of the Kakumei blend and Mexico beans. Both delicious and matched the flavour notes described on the tasting cards (see photos) very well! Note: tasting cards are in Japanese so we used Papago to translate the text. They also have some very yummy desserts 😍
Service: Staff are super-accommodating and kind; and understand a bit of English! They are happy to provide explanations about the coffee (albeit in Japanese).
Atmosphere: Quiet and calm vibe with super cool and clean rustic interior design. The restroom is well-maintained and clean as expected in Japan. It’s bidet-equipped!
This is now a must-go for us whenever we’re in...
Read moreLocated in a quiet neighborhood just a short walk from Nihon Kogakuin College, Kamata Cafe has been getting some solid reviews lately—so we decided to stop by and check it out for ourselves.
We arrived a little after 1 PM and had to wait around 20 minutes to get in, which shows how popular the place is during peak hours. The interior was warm and inviting, with a cozy, local vibe that made it easy to relax once seated.
The coffee was quite good—definitely the highlight of our visit! Their food offerings were decent too, though nothing particularly stood out.
However, we did notice some eye irritation after sitting inside for a while, and found others had mentioned the same in online reviews—possibly due to ventilation issues or cooking smoke.
If you're concerned, consider getting your drinks to go. It’s just a 5-minute walk from Kamata Station—an easy detour if you’re in the area and craving a...
