All the reviews here are correct, both the 1 stars and the 5 stars. However, I'd submit that the "bad service" or "not accommodating" is just cultural lack of understanding of Japanese perfectionist style. I can assure all the serious coffee drinkers reading this that from a fourth wave coffee nerd standpoint, they are making superb light roast coffees and the $5000 Weber EG-1 grinder is not just for show. I saw the lady manually picking the "bad" beans out of their next roast. It shouldn't take a genius to understand from the aforementioned details and the architect-designed, sparse white interior that these guys are deliberately choosing to do things exactly how they want, and from my perspective, if the quality is this high, more power to them. That's the beauty of a 30 million person city like Tokyo that has 2000 coffee shops and can support each owner's distinct style.
My basic Japanese was met with respectful acknowledgement and I have no complaints about the service. The lady even brought the coffee over to the bench I was sitting on. I'll also say that there was a Philippine couple who ordered after me in broken English and they asked for syrup in their latte. Having prior read the reviews here I was worried they might be yelled at or worse, but the barista made the drink, so I can only conclude that the other 1 star reviews must be from an extremely entitled Frappuccino set. If you want Starbucks, there are a ton nearby-- viva choice.
Overall this was in the top 10% of shops I've been to in Japan (now over 100 and counting) and frankly if you know what you're doing, you'll go, and if you don't, just save the owners and yourself the frustration and go to one of the other 20 in the Asakusa area....
Read moreI’ve given this cafe 2 stars because of their delicious coffee. It could’ve been 5 stars if I didn’t experience unfair treatment from the owner. My friend and I were taking photos outside the shop while waiting for our coffee. It was just a second photo then the owner told us “no photo”. We apologised and stopped straight away then few mins later, a Japanese mother and her child were leaving the shop and stopped in front of us and took photos. The owner didn’t say anything and that made me feel unfair. I returned our half cup of coffee straight away and told him that we are not okay for this! He seemed not to care and said “only 2-3 shots of photos is okay”. I later found out this on his website in Japanese!! Please be mindful if you like to take photos especially you kind of people that just walk into a shop without checking their warning in their website on their...
Read moreI came for the Weber eg1s and stayed for the coffee. The drip was mellow but still flavourful (much more subtle than you'll see at glitch but still very nice). I tried the espresso as well and it was a very nice surprise. Espresso is mainly what I drink back at home and I've tried enough espresso in Japan to shy away from it in Japan. The espresso here at Lucent was fantastic and very much surpassed my expectations. It had fantastic rich acidity which mellowed out into a much smoother sweet acidity. The texture as well was fantastic and what I also would like in an espresso. One of the largest oddities with espresso I have found in Japan is the texture lacking in the espressos but here at Lucent the texture was fantastic (and not...
