All Looks, No Substance. Overall, Mercer Brunch is overrated. Not worth the hype, time or money. Lazily prepared food, poorly executed. Just a fancy facade hiding less than ordinary cuisine. Nothing to shout out about, will not recommend.
Honestly, anyone with common sense and basic cooking skills can make these dishes at home, and probably even better.
After reading the many positive reviews and seeing the perpetual long queues day after day, we finally decided to give Mercer Brunch @ Roppongi a try.
We asked the waiter for their best dish and beverage recommendations and ordered them.
We had the following: Grilled Daison Chicken with Scrambled Eggs Salmon Tartar, Avocado & Poached Egg Dill Sauce Brioche French Toast (comes with main dish) Red Wine Sangria
COMMENTS: Grilled Daison Chicken with Scrambled Eggs 🐔 Price ¥2,100 Chicken was lightly seasoned with salt, tender & juicy. Nothing special, basically it's just grilled chicken steak, served warm. It was accompanied by a mixed veggie ragout with eggplant, green and black olives in thick tomato sauce that was cold like it came out of the refrigerator. The veggie ragout was served right next to the other items on the plate that were warm, at least they should place it in a separate ramekin. It overpowers the chicken & scrambled eggs on the plate, I didn't care for it at all. Also noticed other nearby diners leaving the veggie ragout untouched. This veggie ragout os reused with the other sausage and grilled steak mains. Scrambled eggs, had the typical "tornado" shape but were firm, dry and overcooked, served warm. To put into perspective, even McDonald's breakfast scramble is better than this anytime, smooth, tender, moist & buttery.
Salmon Tartar, Avocado & Poached Egg Dill Sauce 🐟 Price ¥1,700 Another disappointing so called top dish. It basically tasted like chopped smoked salmon, layered with a ring of avocado and topped with a poached egg in the middle all done with a ring mold, served cold. The poached egg was sitting on a bunch of rock salt crystals which was most unpleasant to bite into with the already salty smoked salmon.
Brioche French Toast 🍞 Price: Included with mains above Sweet, thick slices of brioche French toast. Lightly crusty on the outside, unevenly grilled and wet in the middle, served hot. Was so so, not everybody appreciates having both sweet and savoury items together. Would have preferred the option of some warm crusty bread like a sourdough with butter & jam on the side.
Red Wine Sangria 🍷 Price: ¥1000 per glass, non-alcoholic at ¥900 per glass After the first sip, we said "This tastes just like Ribena!!!", even that bright red colour is unmistakable.
*Ribena is a popular blackcurrant fruit drink concentrate/soft drink in SEA, currently owned by Suntory.
There was zero wine/alcohol flavour whatsoever, we even doublechecked if we got the non-alcoholic version. Waiter said it was indeed the alcoholic version that's made with "a little red wine", various juices, etc but claims it contains no Ribena. More like a teeny tiny bit of red wine with a ton of Ribena concentrate, fruit juices whatever if we had to guess 😂 This Ribena doppelganger beverage is served in a nice glass, fancied up with some mushy frozen fruit bits, a split cinnamon stick and a sprig of mint.
You can definitely recreate this beverage at home with Ribena concentrate, red wine, cranberry juice, stir in fresh chopped strawberries, a few blueberries and cranberries then garnish with cinnamon stick and fresh mint, serve in a fancy glass.
Optional: Use sparkling Ribena, sparkling wine or a little soda for some bubbly...
Read moreMercer Brunch exceeded our expectations from the moment we stepped in. My wife and I were greeted warmly and seated in the midst of a chic yet relaxed ambiance. As we perused the menu, we were intrigued by the fusion of New York-style brunch with West Coast influences.
For starters, my wife opted for the Salmon Tartar, a dish bursting with freshness and flavor. The Avocado & Poached Egg with Dill Sauce she chose was a delightful combination of creamy avocado, perfectly poached egg, and subtle dill undertones. Each bite was a symphony of taste and texture.
I, on the other hand, couldn't resist the allure of Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Eggs over easy. The chicken was expertly fried to golden perfection, with tender meat encased in a crispy coating. Paired with eggs cooked just right, it was a hearty and satisfying dish that left me craving more.
To complement our brunch, we indulged in champagne, as suggested by the ambiance and the spirit of the occasion. The effervescence of the champagne elevated our meal, adding a touch of luxury to an already unforgettable experience.
In summary, Mercer Brunch provides a delightful culinary experience that is both indulgent and comforting. Its innovative menu and elegant atmosphere make it a destination...
Read moreI’ve heard so much about MERCER BRUNCH—ever since they opened a branch in Taiwan—but I thought it was worth flying to Tokyo to try the original. As the first guests to be seated, the staff let us freely pick a spot, so we chose a bright window-side table. The dining room has a cozy fireplace in the center, flanked by two armchairs, while the windows are lined with two- and four-person tables. The décor feels like a modern European countryside style.
When all the dishes came out, the table looked like a little garden—colorful and lively. The French toast, soaked through with custard yet seared to a dry, lightly crisp surface, came on a small plate of its own. A big bowl of salad was piled high with super fresh, crunchy vegetables. My white sausage was nicely browned and served on a Sicilian-style ratatouille of eggplant, tomato, bell peppers, and olives.
The French toast really stole the show. My partner also makes this type of fluffy, crispy-edged toast at home, but never with slices this thick. Here, every bite was soaked in custard, pan-seared to a golden exterior, and the inside stayed soft and silky—almost like the filling of a egg tart....
