NILAA South Indian restaurant Toranomon Hills — Restaurant in Tokyo

An unapologetically authentic South Indian restaurant with a menu that would satisfy the most demanding palates.

My Tokyo dosa hunt brought me to this hidden joint on a quite Sunday night. It was easy to find a table and the service was beyond any expectations. I’ve been in awarded Indian kitchens before, but I’ve never had such an honest meal cooked for me before,

You can tell the chef takes no shortcuts. The plethora of spices and ingredients exploded on my taste buds on every bite I took. The keema and cheese dosa was truly something you would find on a tasting Pinterest documenting all the different components, which were still very well distinguishable, even though harmoniously unified.

There was also a “paper dosa” on the menu that I didn’t quite understand what it would be like, but I’ll be definitely going back to exhaust the menu...

I happened to stumble across this restaurant and decided to try their lunch menu. I ordered the chicken biriyani lunch set and another set with mutton and chicken curry and then a side portion of onion pakodas. All the dishes had a lot of flavour and the biriyani was a large sized portion. Only thing I would say is that there was only two pieces of meat in the chicken and mutton curry but I do understand that it’s a lunch time menu. I tried the lassi as well which is only 100yen at lunch time and also tasty. I would definitely recommend this restaurant as service was quick, staff were friendly and overall the food had a lot of flavour. The lunch time menu specifically is very good value...

Nilaa is a good addition to the dining scene in Toranomon. The welcome from Ban, the Nepalese head of service, is warm and charming (see picture). Very good customer service. The menu has dished from across South Asia, skilfully made by head chef Estephan. I have visited Nilaa numerous times (I live nearby) and sometimes dine-in and get takeaway on other occasions. Tonight I dined in with my wife, and we enjoyed : Mutton chettinad, with Dal tadka served with Basmati rice and Malabar Paratha. We drank Grover Indian wine and Suntory beer.
