Talk about contrasts! On one evening during my stay in Tokyo, I ventured into Ocean Casita on the 59th floor of the Sunshine 60 building — great views! — and sat at the bar near the entrance. Much of my time there was spent talking to a bartender who made me an amazing margarita. She had such a super-interesting background, growing up as the daughter of Korean and Ukrainian parents in Japan, and we had a great conversation. And so I decided to go again the next evening. With my mouth hankering for another margarita, I arrived at about 7:15 pm and there was virtually no one in the restaurant. Then a woman approached me. “Do you have a reservation?” she asked in a haughty voice. “No, I’d just like to sit at the bar and have a drink,” I responded. “Do I need a reservation for that?” “Yes,” said the snooty lady as she stood in front of the semi-deserted restaurant. This, of course, didn’t happen the night before when I was welcomed and treated very nicely. Was the prissy manageress perhaps turned off by my somewhat casual clothes? Sorry, madam, I guess I should have worn a tuxedo! But my modest outfit had made the cut the night before and the restaurant made some money from me. I suggest that if they want to continue making money that they have more judgement than the door dragon I encountered. With employees like this they’ll be out of...
Read moreThe restaurant is beautiful and the view over Tokyo breathtaking. The pasta we ordered was quite good, even by our Italian standards (it was cooked in the right way and the condiments were adequate). Sadly, the salad was not good and, more importantly, it did not contain what the menu indicated. We ordered a salad with burrata, tomato and prosciutto salato (that’s what the menu literally said). They brought us a salad with less than a tomato, a few strings of prosciutto crudo and only half burrata. They didn’t even serve it with bread, so it was just the green salad and those few scarce additions and that was it. Finally, casita is not an Italian word, it is a Spanish word. Overall, adequate food but the real attraction...
Read moreExtremely disappointing dinner, both service and food were not good. We ordered two pastas at same time but only one pasta arrived at the table. After 5 minutes I asked what happened with the other pasta and it was informed that they ASSUMED that we were going to split each pasta. I informed that I never said anything like that and after some internal discussion they decided to prepare both pastas at same time. The pastas finally arrived but they were grease and extremely heavy. Very sorry to choose here for a celebration. We end up the night frustrated and certain not to...
