RoJean is an American restaurant featuring Midwestern home cooking about 10 minutes from Shimokitazawa Station. As others have said, it definitely tastes exactly like what we eat in America and certainly reminds me of the homecooked meals in Minnesota. If you want to try 100% authentic America home cooking, you can do it at this restaurant. Another bonus is that RoJean is open early at 8, a somewhat uncommon trait around Tokyo where everything seems to open at 11. That being said, I have some issues with this restaurant that will stop me from returning. 1) The prices are too high for what is being served and for the distance from the station. Though the dishes may be unique in Japan, 99% of the menu ingredients can be found in a Japanese supermarket. Ingredients might need to be imported are all shelf-stable foods with a long life span, so I find the prices to be inflated especially since the location is not in a primo spot near the station area. 2) The pottery dishware is beautiful, the kind of rich "country blue" found in every Midwestern kitchen. Yet, the little stylized flowers on many of the plates are broken and leaving chunks of ceramic in the food. I was served a dish with a large chunk of ceramic flower rattling around on the plate, which is not safe. 3) This is a personal issue that may not impact others: Almost every dish, mug, and cup are emblazoned with Christian Bible verses. Christian messages are everywhere on everything. I think most Japanese customers don't notice or don't realize (my husband didn't) that everything is boldly marked with Bible quotes, but for me it was extremely off-putting. This choice of decoration is a main reason I can't return to this restaurant. If you don't mind, or you welcome, Christian messages at every turn, then RoJean will be fine for you, but for those who don't like Christian doctrine shoved in their face, this is a...
Read moreA homesick hideaway in a cozy neighbourhood where what you see is what you get (in a good way) - a good ol' grilled cheese with deliciously comforting soups. I went back twice when I stayed in the neighbourhood and tried both their October special grilled cheese and their regular one, which tasted like it was made with American Cheese - not my cup of tea but enjoyed it regardless. The soups were surprisingly delicious and I wish I could have ordered a huge ass bowl of both of them (A homemade cream of mushroom soup and tomato soup), the grilled cheeses truly aren't anything special but everything tastes like it is made with love and I'll take that over a fancy gourmet grilled cheese any day. Solo travel can be lonely but I found a lot of...
Read moreLovely little cafe in a residential neighbourhood serving quite welcome western style dishes. Oh, and free refill coffee. Yes!
The staff were very kind and friendly, welcoming me in and being patient with my limited language skills. The decor is modern and pretty, feeling cozy and clean. The little outside patio area was lovely to use to enjoy my coffee whilst doing some work.
The food is quite a strange one (but in a good way!). It has what I imagine are American classics given a coffee shop flare to them. I had the pepper sausage grits with biscuits which were absolutely delicious. Need these in the UK.
Well recommended for a an easy start to...
