I was advised to try curry while in Shimokitazawa. My eating partner and I decided on Sama. I had to follow a concrete path and go down some steps. The inside was quite small, but they did have plenty of seating.

You have to scan a QR code to order. See photo for screenshot of the customizing you can do. I was able to read the menu on my phone in English.

There are 30 levels of spiciness (see photo of menu). I got level 6 and my lips were burning. Yes, spicy actually means spicy here! You can choose the portion size also; they are all the same price.

The Shimokitazawa branch of SAMA is one of the famous soup curry restaurants that originated in Hokkaido. If you try the restaurant's curry, you will understand that soup curry is not simply a term for curry with low viscosity like soup, but it is a complete dish. It is a dish that takes the best parts of both a great soup and a great curry and gives them an even greater depth of flavor. I cannot describe the taste of this dish well, so I recommend everyone to try it. The base soup, spiciness, ingredients, and toppings can all be customized, so you can find your own favorite flavor. i was most impressed by the level of customization available. from choosing the soup and its spiciness to adjusting the rice amount and toppings, it was a delightful experience to tailor my meal exactly to my preferences.

while I had heard great things about their coconut soup, i found it to be a bit sweeter than I'm used to, however, the freshness and quality of the veggies in the curry compensated for this.

I opted for the level 10 spice level and it delivered quite a kick!
