One of the nicest meals we’ve had on this trip and also our first time trying Monjayaki! We made our way to Tsukishima because this whole lane of restaurants are mainly Monjayaki restaurants! But I did prior researched and picked Monja Moheji!
I’ve been so curious about it because in shows I see people eating with a tiny spoon and I wanted to experience it myself! It may seem like a goopy mess but it is a very savoury and delicious goopy mess!
We ordered the mentaiko monja + cheese. They start off by making a ring with the cabbage and leaving the ingredients in the middle and once sufficiently cooked, a wet flour mixture is poured in the middle. It is then cooked together until gooey and bubbling then spread out on the pan for diners to enjoy with a tiny cute spatula! I’m very sure the flour mixture is not just any ordinary one but definitely a house recipe because on its own it’s very very tasty and made even more savoury with the mentaiko and cheese. The melty mochi and still slightly crunchy gives textures and it’s an overall wonderful sensory experience. They also provide Sansho pepper and Aomori seaweed to add as you like, we tried both and they tasted just as good too 😋 The staff that cooked our monja was very skilled in his craft!
We also had the buta tamago okonomiyaki which was also cooked in front of us where the staff again showed off his skills, it was cooked perfectly and superb!
My partner also had their hotaru ika as appetizer as he couldn’t resist his squid 🤣 he said it was very fresh, juicy and huge because of the eggs in the head!
The space is very intimate but cosy and we were the only tourists but we received good and patient service. The suction in this place was also good because we didn’t smell badly when we left, our cook also sprayed us with air refreshers before we left 🤣
Lucky we had a reservation because while we were waiting (we were early) we kept seeing people wanting to enter the restaurant but were turned away because they were...
Read moreThis is one of the more unique food that I have ever ate the looks might not be appetising but it's actually very tasty!! This restaurant is located in the famous Monjayaki Street in Tsukishima and it's usually packed with customers and you might need to queue for some time if you are dining at peak hours. The must order dish here is definitely Monjayaki and there are actually many variants of it and the most popular one is the Mentaiko Monjayaki but I find the Squid ink version much more delicous as its more savoury and taste like Squid Ink Rissoto. The Monjayaki are made in front of you at your table by the staff once you complete your order hence you do not need to worry if you do not know how to cook. This store has got staffs that speaks English and Mandarin hence you don't need to worry about communication problems. Once the dish is cooked you will be eating with a small metal spatula from the metal pan on your table and its definitely the most delicous goob that I have ever ate. (it's looks might be deceiving). The Monjayaki actually taste better once it starts to cook a bit longer on the pan as it will start to get charred and that's where the extra deliciousness comes from. Do take note that there is actually a minimum order in the restaurant hence you will need to order at least 2 main dish if you wish to dine here. Definitely give this dish a try if you are in Tokyo as its a very tasty and unique dish only...
Read moreDon't judge Monja (もんじゃ/ Savory Lava Pancake) by its appearance; it's a whole new Teppanyaki experience waiting to be discovered.
Monja is the Okonomiyaki’s gooier cousin, made mainly with runny flour batter and cabbage. Moheji (もへじ, established in 1871) also operates a fish business, bringing in fresh seafood straight from the market.
My hubby took me to Tsukishima, Monja Wonderland with an old-school vibe, for a casual dinner date. We were seated at the counter with our own iron griddle, and fear not — your friendly waiter will cook everything from scratch, right before your eyes.
We had three dishes that evening;
-Sizzling Squid Teppanyaki with Briny Umami Butter (いかの丸焼き肝バター/ Ika no Maruyaki Kimo Butter)
-Creamy Monja with Spicy Cod Roe and Diced Rice Cake(明太子もちもんじゃ チーズトッピング/ Mentaiko Mochi Monja) with extra Cheese toppings
-Wagyu Tendon Okonomiyaki(和牛すじ玉/ Wagyu Suji Tama)
Each dish was cooked and served to perfection. Their signature dish "Creamy Monja with Spicy Cod Roe and Diced Rice Cake" was phenomenal. Monja is a time-sensitive culinary art — you first enjoy its velvety texture, which gradually transforms into a pleasant crunch. Some staff seemed to speak a little English, so fire up Google Translation and order your...
