I recently visited this Indonesian restaurant in Tokyo with high hopes, but unfortunately walked away with mixed feelings. It’s always exciting to find Indonesian food abroad—especially in a city as vibrant and cosmopolitan as Tokyo—but this experience left quite a bit to be desired.
Before heading over, I tried calling the restaurant to check if there was seating available, but no one picked up. While that kind of lack of responsiveness might be par for the course at some Indonesian eateries, I expected a bit more attention to service—especially in Japan, where hospitality and responsiveness are usually top-notch. It was a small thing, but it set the tone.
Once inside, the food was average, with a few bright spots. I ordered the nasi campur, hoping for something that captured the variety and soul of Indonesian cuisine. Unfortunately, the portion was so shockingly small it felt almost insulting. Taste-wise, it was fine—but nothing memorable, and certainly not satisfying as a standalone meal.
On the upside, the tempe mendoan was well-executed: crispy, flavorful, and probably the best thing I had. It gave me a brief glimpse of what the meal could have been if the same care had gone into the rest of the menu.
If you’re craving Indonesian food in Tokyo, this place can fill that gap—but I’d think twice before recommending it. It’s more of a “well, I guess this will do” option rather than a spot that truly celebrates Indonesian cuisine or...
Read moreThis is my third visit to the little amazing establishment and as always they outdid themselves once again. We tried the beef rendang which was some of the best i have ever had in my life albeit that the portion size was a little small. Chicken satay and roast duck were really good as well but the rendang was by far the star of the night, we went back for seconds.
Stumbled onto this absolute gem of a hidden delight... wow, just wow. The best Indonesian food I have ever had in my 36 years of existence. Completely blown away. This little unassuming place on the mezzanine floor of the building is a hardcore flavour dealer. I had the lumpia - spectacular although not much to look at. The chicken and beef satay - the chicken stole the show by far, so much so that I had to order another before leaving. And I was advised to drench my rice in the leftover peanut sauce - gorgeous little tip. For mains I had the duck on the recommendation of the server and boy was right to go with the suggestion. The duck was tender and so well done. All in all, I wasnt expecting too much but was completely blown away. This has currently become my favourite spot in yokohama, nay maybe even in Tokyo. Ive promised to bring my friends back and will not stop singing this places praises. Goes without saying that...
Read moreI love tempeh, but have never been to an Indonesian restaurant before, so this was a treat! We had Gado Gado salad with peanut sauce. So good, especially with the hot sauce. Plus rice and Tempeh Balado. Dawet Ayu drink was fresh and coconutty with green jelly strings. Arak Guava was delicious and the staff were so nice and brought me a new one after I clumsily knocked mine off the table. Husband also loved the satay skewers. Not 100% sure if the tempeh was vegetarian or vegan, but there was no meat in it. Gado Gado had a hard boiled egg and some chips that were probably shrimp, but I think a vegetarian or vegan could find awesome options here by talking to the staff for guidance. We went on a Saturday night around 7 pm and it was busy, but we were seated right away and then it started...
