Read moreWe heard a lot of good things about Le Grenier A Pain and really looked forward to it. (We visit different parts of France every few years and have some experience with French food and pastry).
As vegetarians we did not have many options. We had the egg and mushroom toast and mediterranean toast with balsamic lettuce cappachino and hot chocolate . They were both exactly what their names stated. For the prices we were disappointed. Especially the hot chocolate that tasted like cooking chocolate stirred in. French chocolate - IYKYK. So we took off a star for value for money.
For desserts we had an Eclair, Caramel layer cake, Salted caramel tart took home Macarons, and Multigrain bread. The Eclairs and tart were tasty, the cake too sweet and not enough flavour of Caramel. Macarons were seriously sweet and dry like biscuits (not cookies) and did not have the almond flavour to the biscuits. The filling flavours were good. So one star was removed for pastry taste. It would be nice if the pastries (which are not on the menu) were labeled with names and prices so we don't have to bother the busy staff behind the counter to differentiate each one.
Perhaps the non vegeterian dishes were more flavour filled, delicious and worth the price. This is however our review of our experience.
Service was good and food came promptly as possible on a Sunday Morning for brunch. The staff were well informed about the menu and table service was spot on.
The decor and ambience is lovely. It gets a bit loud that you can't hear each other well.
On a side note/and not reflected in my review of the cafe :
The WC (not part of the restaurant) were abysmal. No soap, no bog rolls, and filthy and had no baby...
Read moreI really loved their food, especially their pastry, but didn’t like their service at all.
Visited the place on a weekend when they had a number of clients, most of which were foreigners. Could not figure out which tables were reserved and which weren’t coz there was no one to guide.
Had to move from table to table 3 times. The first one, no one came to serve me, the second one was reserved, they were very quick to tell me that I was seated in the wrong place, and I finally ended up at the final table where I received my share of discrimination.
The wait times at certain moments were ridiculous to the point where you’re almost pleading with some of them to sort you out. Funny enough the foreigners around me were very comfortable and didn’t seem to experience the same.
When I asked for a cake menu, I was told to go check them out myself at the counter. The people at the counter were literally ignoring me even after asking for assistance. Finally someone came through and I had to carry the cake for my self back to where I was seated coz the waiters were “too busy” to do it.
It was a nasty experience, despite enjoying their scrumptious food. It’s such a big shame that one can leave a place feeling like you were treated like a “low value” client who doesn’t deserve to be there due to how they handle you.
It may be deliberate, it may be not. Who knows. Lemmi share words of wisdom:
"A restaurant that serves all clients with equal respect will taste the true flavor of success; it's the small gestures of fairness that create a...
