As the sun dipped below the horizon and the cobblestone streets of Old Riga echoed with the whispers of history, we made our way to Rozengrāls, a medieval tavern steeped in the lore of centuries past. Nestled in the narrow Rozena Street, this historic gem, once known as Vinarium Civitatis Rigensis, has been a staple of the city’s vibrant culture since 1293. Entering the tavern felt like stepping back in time. The flickering candlelight cast shadows on the ancient stone walls, adorned with relics from Riga’s storied past, including a well dating back to the late 13th century and fragments of the original defensive wall built in 1201. We arrived late in the evening, just as the bustling energy of the day began to wane, and the tavern readied itself for a peaceful close. Seeking to indulge in the local traditions, we ordered the burnt garlic bread—a revered delicacy here, given a special twist that sets it apart from the ordinary. The bread, with its rich, smoky flavor, was a delightful start to our medieval feast. Yet, a hint of regret lingered as I passed on the onion soup, a staple that I would later wish I had tried. But any longing was quickly dispelled as we delved into the main course—a succulent pork knuckle, hearty enough to serve three. Its tender meat, perfectly roasted, paired wonderfully with the robust red wine we had chosen for the evening. We opted to skip the traditional side of sauerkraut, not being particularly fond of its tartness. Throughout our meal, the service was impeccable. The staff, dressed in period costumes, added an authentic touch to the medieval ambiance, making us feel like honored guests at a grand feast. The immersive experience was further enhanced by the medieval music that floated through the halls, completing the transportive journey to a bygone era.

Tucked away beneath the bustling streets of Riga, Latvia, lies a hidden gem that offers a culinary journey back in time. The restaurant, an atmospheric establishment nestled in a centuries-old underground setting, provides not only a feast for the palate but also a deep dive into Latvian heritage. Upon descending into the restaurant, the ambiance transports you to a bygone era. The dimly lit interior, with its stone walls and wooden beams, exudes an air of historical mystique and candles as lights , making it an ideal spot for those seeking an intimate dining experience. The carefully curated decor, featuring traditional Latvian artifacts and folk music gently playing in the background, complements the overall experience, enhancing the sense of authenticity and charm. The menu is a heartfelt ode to Latvian culinary traditions. It offers an array of dishes that showcase the richness of Latvia’s gastronomy, using locally sourced ingredients. One standout dish is the “Duck Breast” which is perfectly flaky and savory, capturing the homely essence of Latvian comfort food as the main course. The service at this restaurant is as warm and welcoming as the atmosphere. The staff, dressed in traditional Latvian attire, are knowledgeable about the dishes and their historical significance, eager to share stories that enrich the dining experience. In conclusion, this underground restaurant in Riga is not just a place to eat but a destination to experience. It serves as a beautiful reminder of Latvia’s rich cultural tapestry and offers a unique opportunity to indulge in traditional Latvian cuisine in a setting that feels like a step back in time. Whether you are a local or a tourist, a meal here is a profound way to connect with the history and culinary traditions of Latvia. Highly recommended!

We have gone to this extremely unique restaurant in Old Town Riga several times now - taking visitors to this period dining experience. Everything about this restaurant will keep your head spinning. First of all, I would highly suggest making a reservation - it can be very busy. Before you enter the restaurant, there are a couple of photo ops, and usually, an employee outside and greet people. Are you wondering how to get in? There are two entrances to the restaurant, leading down under the buildings and street level. Once downstairs, you'll feel like you have been sent back in time - period dress, candle lighting, decor, music, and food. I will say that the menu may not be for everyone, but there are choices that should meet most people's concerns. We ordered the cheese plate, which was a great sharing plate. I would have to say my favorite item for an experience is the French Onion Soup (no cheese). Its presentation is off the charts for uniqueness and tasted pretty good for onion soup. The main are definitely hearty and can definitely be too much food for one (take a look around the restaurant at other tables hahaha). I will say that some of the meals may have components that may be something to be desired, but overall, they are very good, and the presentation for some will have the table talking. The last I will say about the restaurant is to definitely go exploring during your meal - everything is interesting hahaha. Be sure not to miss the connecting tunnel under the road that leads to the other part of the restaurant. There is a photo op throne, and you'll even be surprised at the bathrooms. Have a great time being sent back in time, have a few laughs, and is definitely a must-see for visitors. Thanks.

Mixed feelings about this one. Firstly I must say the atmosphere is spot on. A bit of a cliche, but as you are probably going here for an experience, its what most people expect. Myself, I loved it. But then theres the food, and service. Which both were on standard they should never be anywhere at least partly. Service just above food. I had pork shank. Its a whole one, fitted on a spit-like thing, hanging above a smallish plate, with the skin on. I get it the skin keeps it in one piece, but in the dark it was very tricky to eat without staining your clothes with the pig fat. I get the theatrical approach, but still. Just a big plate without a spit would be as great if not better. After some work, it was quite good, and I liked it. However the anticlimax came fast. The gherkins. Had a small bite of one, and immediately had to spit it out because it tasted and smelled like a horse manure. Definitely not edible. I really hope they arent supposed to be like that. 1st thing of being a chef: Never serve anything like that. Told the waiter about it, and asked him to tell the kitchen to check them. No apologies, no reaction, and nothing afterwards either. Apple strudel was ok, nothing to complain about, nothing special, and the waiter just almost forgot my drink. For the experience and price it wasn't bad, you won't leave here hungry, but theres lots to fix before its 4.5/5. Don't know where it comes from.

This was one of the best places i had an occasion to visit in Riga. From the entrance there is a feel of the medieval times, great stylish walls, stairs corridors, even inside arranged in a way that you will not notica any bulbs, just candles, the modern light is very discrete. I went for a red beer which turned out to be perfect for the consumption, it was not very bitter and the taste did not last long enough to overcome the food. I have started with an onion soup, it was brought in a big bowl with a crusty bread to be put inside, it was warming and filling dish. Then i went for the rabbit and that was a big one, three types of groats and a portion of a rabbit, the gamechanger was a half of the entire garlic that boosted up the entire experience. Another wow is for the service, each person from the crew has its ow medieval styled attire, they are very helpful and willing to provide the description of a dish. I am astonished. And the palce itself ... gheez i could write a book about each element, event lack of regular light at the toilets but candles instead, rhat is maiking the room unique. And toilets behind heavy doors. A mysterious place as a whole because it is a combination of halls connected by tunnels. If that was the only thing i saw in Riga it still would be worth to see it! 12/10

Located in the heart of Riga's historic center, this hidden gem of an ancient medieval restaurant offers a dining experience like no other. Tucked away in a cave, stepping inside feels like entering a portal to the past, with dimly lit caverns exuding mystery and intrigue. The enchanting ambiance, with flickering candlelight and medieval artifacts, transports diners back to a bygone era. While the food is delicious, it takes a back seat to the immersive atmosphere and historical charm. Despite the lack of modern conveniences, such as electric lights, the soft glow of candles enhances the enchanting atmosphere, creating a truly memorable dining experience. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply seeking unique culinary adventures, a visit to this medieval restaurant is a must-do in Riga's rich cultural landscape. Prepare to be transported back in time as you dine like a noble in the heart of the historic center.
