A nice museum located in a charmingly historical building. Many art collections of other European countries, such ad Germany, Austria and Holland. The Asian art collections were less impressive, especially those gifts from embassies of some Asian countries. The museum is clean and is less crowded during this time of year (in February). The entrance fee was reasonable l, 3 euros per adult, which I thought was very affordable.
Two minus stars because we didn’t see much of local Latvian artworks. Also, we felt that we were being watched all the time during our visit. We were beginning to feel uncomfortable at the end of the tour. Its staff are perhaps just doing their jobs and hardworking. But it would have been nicer if they could be a bit more discreet in watching visitors. We were here to appreciate your artworks, not here to damage or vandalise them. We are definitely not criminals. Also, the lightings were a bit too strong, and they could damage paintings...
Read moreFor SEVEN euros, this place is quite overrated. I was also seriously disappointed the unsmiling ticket agent refused to accept my press business card bc it wasn’t a “press pass” (my company DOESN’T DO THEM). I even offered to verify the card with my ID but she refused. Just ridiculous. For an expensive €7 I should be longer in a museum than 1 hour (if even that). It has gorgeous interiors, but middling, dark paintings (lots of boring landscapes and animal stills). There’s a lovely porcelain collection from Asia and an exhibit on Indian art which has some decent material. The Egyptian collection is one tiny room with a mummy and shabtis as well as amulets. The Greek/Roman room is broken pottery shards and a stash of coinage.
Overall, too much money for this place. Should be no more...
Read moreArt museum in the very heart of Riga. Historical building of stock exchange. Permanent collection offers wide range of artefacts from ancient Egypt sarcophagus, ancient Greek and Roman art, Chinese, Japanese, Middle East art objects. Paintings from different eras. Good overview of classics. Beautiful interior, recently renovated. Exposition is located on 4 floors. It takes about an hour to get acquainted with all the exhibits. I really enjoyed the Nicholas Roerich's exposition, especially his tempera artworks.
