Been wanting to try Kak Ayu's cooking for years and finally I did it! But sad to say when I went for dinner, Kak Ayu is no where near to be seen. And so I just proceed to order the food. Tried their Ikan Bakar I Love You, Satay, Ayam Percik, Ayam Goreng Bawang, Kerabu Mango, Sotong Goreng and Kobis for vege. All in all I think the food is good but not superb. The Satay is superb. Really big piece of marinated meat, tender and juicy and it is good even without satay sauce! Ikan Bakar is the second best dish for me because they grill it long enough and I really like a little bit of overburnt fish meat and the sambal is nice as well, not too spicy. The Sotong Goreng Tepung is done just right too as it is not covered too much with fluor and is still crispy. Ayam Percik sauce is nice as well but the Ayam Goreng Bawang's meat is quite hard according to most of my family members. Although I did not order any curry, I was happy that the staff there offered us a bowl of curry and that definitely helps elevate the overall taste and flavour when we eat the dishes and rice with the curry added.
Overall price is not too bad (if compared to atas restaurant like Irama Dining) or you can say it is pricey too if you compare to normal Chinese Chu Char restaurant.
I missed out ordering the Asam Pedas so you bet I will return to try it. But is it so nice that I will return often? Most likely not. I can easily satisfy my cravings for Malay food at many other Nasi Melayu stores at a much...
Read moreHidden away along Burmah Road is this gem which has begun to make a name for itself for good Malay food. The easiest way to find it is to look for Ghee Hiang and Quallys occupies the left most lot of three lots there.
Parking is almost non existent and you'd have to park a little away at the streets nearby.
The shop is fronted with a grill and a serving area which displays the offerings of the day. Around 10 to 12 dishes are normally on display and the grill seems to be operating non stop with daily specials.
The proprietor would normally be the one cooking and serving, and she is really a gem. The warmth in her greeting and assistance in introducing and choosing the dishes, encourages one to try almost everything.
Dropping in for an early lunch at around 11:30am, there were already diners in the small but comfortable dining area. Also, as I sat inside gorging myself on her dishes I noticed a queue forming outside - another sure sign of popularity.
The dishes I had were Stingray curry which was done perfectly. Fried chicken, beef brisket, vegetables, and the briyani rice with hardboiled eggs were all perfect. Ingredients used were all very fresh, and the quality speaks for itself.
My dining mate also suggested to try the Ayam Percik when it's available next as well, which, disappointingly was not during my time there.
Prices are super reasonable and it's now on my list of must visit when I am back in...
Read moreI've dined at Quallys many times at their old location, it was GOOD, but never since they moved to Jalan Masjid Negeri. Finally decided to give it a try again. Unfortunately the experience was disappointing. The waitress who don't seem very local kept pushing us to order. The ikan bakar shelf was attractive but RM100/kg for cockles (kerang) was too much. I picked up a 0.5kg fish tail and asked how much was it. The waitress said it would have to be weighed.. I stood there and she asked if I'm to proceed with it. I looked back at her and how much would they tail cost? She repeated. So? Weigh it!! She DID NOT. She pushed us further to order other dishes and ended the ordering session. I immediately called her back to ask how much was the fish then, she said it was being cooked already. But I said, I don't even know the price yet! It turned out to be RM76. That's like RM138 for a kg of it. Expensive, but fine, given the good reputation of the shop. But we cancelled everything and left because she was just not honest and had disappointed everyone.
As for the atmosphere of the shop, it's just a normal shop no aircon don't expect even...
