a weekend market in Penang!
this market takes place right behind the Hin Bus Depot on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am - 5pm. we went on a Sunday at around 3pm and the atmosphere there was still rather lively. there are performances scheduled for the heart of the market, flea markets to the left, beverages to the right, and food and desserts towards the end of the market.
the flea markets are delightful, with many handmade goods (soaps, earrings, hair accessories) along with a pop-up flash tattoo stand. the sellers are all really friendly, skilled and informative about their goods. I picked up
the food sold was hit or miss, we picked up Penang laksa (RM15), a mushroom-bacon pizza (RM18), Vietnamese coffee pudding (RM6), coconut ice cream (RM5), mango sticky rice (RM8) and because the mango in the sticky rice was so good we bought a mango for the same price. we really liked how generous the Penang laksa was with the fish portions (justifying the price) but the pizza was lacking despite its price. the Vietnamese pudding might just be my own problem, it was a tad too firm and eggy for me. mango sticky rice is a proper highlight though, with a generous serving of rice and a whole mango being used. aunty was so shocked when we tried to buy her mango đ
as for the beverages, they were all kinda overpriced, which wasnât that much of a shocked considering the high tourist traffic. there was one cool coffee brewery operating from the back of a van.
overall though i loved the vibes of the place, lively and young and just the right side of hipster. since it only happens on weekends, do drop by for a visit! 1st Avenue mall also happens to be just...

But, I felt disappointed when i know some of the store is selling stock from TaoBao and the price is TRIPLE! As the photo i shown, i bought a set of bunny postcard for RM14.90. After that, i realized this item is from TaoBao because i saw the packaging is made in China and I scanned it in TaoBao apps. This item actually sold as RMB7(RM4++) only. What a sad thing. I love art, I always support to buy handicraft and I bought this bunny postcard as I thought this is 100% original crafted by Penang artist. I felt scammed when I notice the truth. Hin Pop-up market is artist sell THEIR OWN product right? Please don't sell this kind of product which are not really created by themselves. They spoil this nice platform. Please management check and warn these stores... Advise visitor check the packaging to understand the provenance...
Read moreA rather nice place to chill, or for gathering with friends. There is a cafe with a/c at the entrance and the other one from my photo is a room with tables and chairs with a western food stall cum bar outside.
We bought the assam laksa from the peddling stall and they told us we can bring it in to have the food there. To order drinks or not is not compulsory so itâs fine.
A rather small place, but with different sections to do different things. There is food trucks area, DIY handcrafted stalls, mini shop houses, and 2 air conditioned areas. Place is also surrounded by art, like wall paintings and art placements.
More for youngsters to chill, not so much for family with...
