Please fire the cashier with the round spec on 29th Dec evening shift. If she's the manager or daughter of the boss, please replace her with someone friendlier or suitable to be front liner receptions.
We are the first time visitors to this place or to Penang, recommended by local friends to celebrate our wedding anniversary.
There were 4 families ahead of us. We went up to the window area to collect our queue number, per the instruction written on the wall. We kindly knock on the closed window pane while shes inside (no customer).
She saw us and looked away while a customer just approached her at the cashier. We waited patiently as shes serving some customers. Shes done after 1-2mins, she didnt open the window, but without a smile and slanted her eyes towards us and pointed a gesture of '1' or 'wait' pointing at me. We didnt understand what it means. We shrugged our shoulder, we dont understand.
She opened her window pane, real rudely and speaks in Mandarin, and rolled her eyes, how many pl. I said 4 paxes. Then she continues to speak rudely, " fill the form n wait" while passing us the menu, a pencil rolling and a small piece of paper. While we almost catch the menu n stuff, she further her introduction on the promo pointing to the side, and said Monday.
We asked sorry what Monday, we dont understand. She rolled her eyes n slammed on the wall and said the promo on the wall is until Monday. Whole conversation is without a smile and side eyeing the customers throughout.
This time, i asked for her name. She asked rudely," what for!?" . I would like to make a review. She refused to provide and cunningly laugh, " whats your issue?" And slammed the window pane to discontinue the conversation.
It was supposed to be a memorable trip to enjoy the dinner. Unfortunately we walked away due to super unpleasant experience.
You may lose a customer which may not hurt the business. Its my loss. We shall never step foot...
Read moreI can’t express enough how much my wife, family, and I loved our experience at Kakuriyo Ramen. We traveled all the way from Ipoh to Penang just for this, and let me say it was beyond worth it. From the moment we stepped inside, we were warmly greeted, and the hospitality that Chef Edward, his amazing team, and the Japanese chef-owner provided was exceptional. It’s rare to find a place that makes you feel so welcomed and at home, but Kakuriyo Ramen has mastered it.
The ramen itself? Incredible. Every bowl is crafted with such care and precision. The rich, flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles are a testament to the passion they have for their food. The attention to detail from the soft-boiled eggs with their golden centers to the tender slices of pork made each bite an absolute delight. The balance of flavors was spot on, and it’s clear they use high-quality ingredients to deliver such a remarkable experience.
Chef Edward went above and beyond to check on us, making sure everything was perfect, while the Japanese chef-owner’s warmth and dedication to his craft were evident in every dish that left the kitchen. It’s not just about the food here, it’s the entire experience. They’re attentive, always smiling, and genuinely care about their guests, something that is becoming rarer to find these days.
If you’re looking for authentic, soul-satisfying ramen, Kakuriyo Ramen is the place to be. It’s so good, we’re already planning our next trip from Ipoh back to Penang just to dine here again. Thank you to Chef Edward and the entire team for making our visit so memorable. This is truly a gem that stands out, and we can’t...
Read moreJapan's globally renowned comfort food in Penang's local neighborhood. Located in the service road behind Moulmein Rise, this restaurant is converted from a residential terrace house and hidden from the main road.
The dashi for the tonkotsu and kuro ramen were both thick and flavorful from the pork bones, and customization is available to have them in low, medium or high sodium (I chose low for mine, and had a slight regret because I may have bought a bit more time for my body to exist in this world, but my soul withered a bit). I believe medium would be just the right balance. The ramen was nice and springy, and the toppings were equally wonderful with slices of flavorful chashu, perfectly cooked ajitama, seaweed, spring onions and crunchy wood ear mushrooms. Further customization can be done with a healthy selection of condiments on each table.
There is a queue system and a waiting area at the porch area of the house, so I was able to get my order in and drink complimentary iced water while waiting for my turn. There are only about 9 tables (2-4 pax) inside, and therefore queuing is inevitable.
One thing to note is that there are customers who will choose to socialize at their tables long after finishing their meals resulting in unnecessarily long waiting times. Some education of ramen-eating etiquette may be required by the owner to the customers lest the passive aggressive stares from disapproving customers in the queue escalate into full...
