Koay Teow Thng is undoubtedly one of Penang's most well known dishes. It has gone through a transformation through the years, with many stalls taking risks with the addition of various additional ingredients of side dishes. In fact, it's been so transformed, that it's really hard to look for one that stays true to its roots.
This stall at the corner of Lebuh Melayu & Lebuh Pantai (Malay Street & Beach Street) aims to stay true to this original flavour of a hearty bowl of flat rice noodles with a soup made of chicken and pork stock. Add on some fish balls. chicken meat, fish cake and top it off with crispy fried garlic oil, and you're done.
When I got to the stall at around 6:30pm, there were already patrons waiting around for their orders. Seating is limited to the 5 or so tables that are laid out along the five foot way behind the stall. If you're in a crowd of 4 or more, you'd be hard pressed to find a table that will fit all of you together.
Parking is not too bad, if you're willing to walk a bit along Beach Street.
Some may find this stall's Koay teow thing soup not as tasty, but for me, this reminds me of how it used to taste - not overly flavoured by the addition of sugar or even MSG which is prevalent in a lot of other stalls. The ingredients are fresh, and the fishball is springy - perfect.
The stall does offer add-ons should you want them. Chicken feet and innards are available as a side order, and are a delicious addition to your already hearty bowl.
For the price I paid, I got a lot more than what I bargained for - I got myself a truly satisfying bowl of goodness that harks back to the good old days when food was real, and didn't require too...
Read moreThis is a street food style rice noodle soup. I was recommended to try by a local friend. This place serves very simple koay teow soup. Small bowl is only rm5. You can add on ingredients like fish bowls, chicken slices, chicken feet, gizzards, or pork innards. The soup tastes like they cook with old hens. Sweet, clear and flavourful. The chicken feet are soft, but have a different chewy texture. The fish ball is pretty good. The owner is friendly. Serving speed is fast. I'd love it if they have some minced meat in the soup.
There is another stall next to it selling indian mee goreng. That is pretty good. Price is cheap.
There is a small facility house opposite this eatery where some uncle aunties sing karaoke there. It gives a very different vibe...
Read moreIt's quite rare to find Koay Teow Th'ng (KTT) available at night in Penang, so we decided to give this spot a try. While parking can still be a bit tricky, it's manageable. To our surprise, the place was fairly crowded.
The soup base was decent, but the noodles were on the mushy side. I ordered the small portion, which turned out to be mostly noodles with only a small amount of meat—disappointing in terms of balance.
Interestingly, there's a free karaoke session happening just across the street if you're up for some entertainment.
Overall, it was just okay—nothing special, but...
