Located at the junction of Perak Road and Van Praagh Road, Maga Restaurant is a bustling evening-only food centre beloved by locals across Jelutong and Penang Island . Operating typically from 3–4 pm until late (with alternate Sunday closures), it’s home to around 20 hawker‑style stalls offering Chinese, Malay and western dishes all under one roof .
Standouts include the curry mee stall, where the soup’s fragrant coconut and cuttlefish pieces pop with freshness—often elevated with mint leaves and ginger flower addition for extra zing . The Hokkien mee/loh mee stall is also a standout—rich prawn‑based broth, sliced pork, boiled egg, shrimp, pork rind, and optional add‑on chicken feet or intestines; the thick loh mee gravy and garlic vinegar make it truly satisfying .
Other favourites to try: yam rice, fish head bee hoon, pan mee, Hainan chicken rice, tom yam noodles, yong tau foo, fried oyster and belacan chicken—all typical here and worth sampling . Also claypot rice with salted fish and runny egg ranks high among regulars .
Tables may be communal and the venue modest, but the food is bustling, authentic, and affordable: curry mee bowls at RM3–4, oyster plates around RM6, claypot rice about RM6 as of past pricing references .
Overall, Maga Restaurant is a go‑to after‑work destination for flavour‑packed local dishes across a wide spectrum—perfect for small groups or solo night‑time hawker exploration at...
Read moreDrove past this coffee shop many times as Jalan Van Pragh is a short cut from Jalan Perak to Jalan Tan Sri Teh Ewe Lim.
Saw the award-winning Curry Mee (Lao Mu Tzi). Tapau home once.
Went there for dinner this evening with my wife. I still had the Curry Mee. Nice but wish that the stall owner can tone down the saltiness and balance up with a tiny bit of sweetness. Roast pork was a nice addition.
My wife had wine chicken noodle soup. The chicken meat was still tender and the soup was really nice with shaoxin wine flavor coming through.
We also ordered a grilled piece of ray fish. Well marinated and grilled to perfection.
What other dishes are good in this coffee shop? I observed that the Koay Teow Thng and Wonton Mee stalls were very “quiet” because they sit high up in the actual coffee shop level. Most of the stalls are operating at street level.
Hehe.. I am not even sure how the coffee shop owner got approval to put up chairs and tables on a...

Banjian kuih pancake was delicious, especially the coconut, corn, and peanut version. It was crunchy and tasty. RM2.80 per serving. Serving within 5 minutes upon ordering. 4 stars
Ee fu mee and fried dry horfun were from the same stall. Ee fu mee was slightly above average as the noodle was lack of flavour. The sauce was mediocre and too watery. RM7.50 per small serving with egg. 3 stars
The fried dry horfun was outstanding. The wok hei was strong, and just the horfun alone was enough for me. RM7.50 per small serving. Ingredients were great with the horfun. 5 stars
The grilled squid with petai at RM27 was great. The squid was fresh, juicy, and special, pleasing my tastebud. The curry sauce was delicious, and the petai elevated the taste of fresh squid to...
