Mundane Coffee Break — Restaurant in George Town

Update 1: We enjoy coming back here. The vibes are so chilled. We tried two scones - cranberry and cheese tomato. Excellent. The lemon cake slice could have been a tad less sweet but nevertheless went well with the Flat White. My wife had Beet It a cold concoction of beetroot, apple and carrot juice and enjoyed it, as the sun had almost roasted us before we entered. As with the previous visits we were served by friendly faces and the music playing was a delight.

Older review: Cute place tucked away in one of the narrow lanes behind the Pulau Tikus market. Has character in spades and positivity by the bushel. You need to visit to feel the vibes. Here are my scores:

Name’s Mundane, but it’s anything but. Stopped in for a coffee and ended up sticking around longer than planned. Coffee? Solid. Proper stuff — none of that burnt, watery nonsense you get in mall cafés run by people who hate mornings.

Fresh, hand-prepared food too, which was a nice surprise. None of this straight-from-the-freezer microwave job. You can actually taste someone gave a toss making it. Scones, sandwiches, a few bits on the side — all hit the mark.

Cash only. Come on. It’s 2025 — But you know what? I’ll forgive it, because the service was great, the coffee was worth it, and the food wasn’t just an afterthought.

Little on the pricey side, yeah, but you get what you pay for. And in this case, it’s decent caffeine, nice people, and food made by human hands, not a button on...

The coffee here is nice, and the place is nicer than I thought it would be! Neat and cute decor, everything is well put together. I learnt that there’s quite a big coffee scene in Penang due to the posters they put on the wall!

One thing about the place is the spotlights are directed to the seats and since I have issues with light, I’m uncomfortable with that. But the place is cool otherwise!

The people are nice and welcoming as well. I’d like to try their food some other time when I (will definitely) visit again! Their tomato scones...
