After a late dim sum breakfast and before the 7pm dinner, we went for afternoon tea. I'm thinking of just sharing 1 of each among the two of us. Chicken egg fried kuey teow got the wok hei and generous with the crispy pork lard and Chinese sausages. The Assam laksa thick broth with the slight chewy rice noodles were my favourite. I like the pineapple, cucumber, lettuce, and mint in it with the prawn paste to balance out the sourness. I chose to opt out raw red onions, just my personal preference.
After eating half of each type, we exchanged the look and decided to order the same again as we couldn't get enough of it. We went there on Sunday afternoon 3pm ish. There's not many people, we are lucky to get the char kuey teow before it closes at 4pm. He said he would not open on Monday.
The laksa need to self-service to bring to the table. Other food will be sent over by stall owners.
The coffee shop has fans in the building, and it can be quite hot and stuffy when it's packed with people. There's table sittings at the side of the shop on the road with cover.
Room for improvement. We will still visit for...
Read moreTaman Emas hosts the best laksa hawker in town. She is apparently a prize-winner - you will see her posters in the restaurant. Live in GT and have visited many times over the last 2 years, including taking Malaysian & foreign guests. Everyone loves the laksa. It is consistently excellent & authentic: great fish piece content in the sweet-sour soup, which is not too sweet but with real pineapple flavour and contains all the correct Penang laksa herbs & spices. Noodles are bouncy & cooked to perfection. Sauce is correct. All ingredients packed into the bowl. Overall good portion sizes for the quality you are getting (eg. small bowl is RM5.50 - compare that with central GT hawkers who use half the ingredients!). Simple (Teochew?) steamed yam or chive dumplings and fried spring roll side orders are decent accompaniments. Most customers are clearly there for the laksa, including some tourist minivans. Never had a problem finding a table though. Outdoor seating under a permanent awning. Service from restaurant and hawkers is friendly and relaxed. Definitely worth the trek off the...
Read moreThe Asam Laksa here has very natural taste. To me, it s a little mix with Thai, however very tasty. (Currently they are closed on Mondays). I was there on a Monday, and since it was close, I noticed the mixed rice located outside looks rather delicious and fresh. YES, I had Ikan pari Asam pedas & a few other dishes on the sides. I was sooo tempted, that I actually took quite a lot and shared with my family. Noticed, many other customers are enjoying their dishes as well. To me, highly recommended. On the next day, I returned for the Asam Laksa, fried springroll, also tried the Chee Chong Fun and Char Kuey Teow. Well, the Char Kuey Teow is a little oily to my likings, similarly, it has an oil smell. Not to my liking. The Chee Chong Fun is ok, ok, as I noticed the sour " plum sauce" used, instead of the olden days of using "red sauce". Also, the "Hair Koh" they use is not that tasty and aromatic to my expectation.BTW, the beverage from the Kopi Tiam is of...
