Wan Dao Tao Restaurant, listed in the Michelin Guide, is a well-known spot that attracts both locals and visitors looking to explore Penang’s famous flavours. With its reputation, expectations naturally run high. However, during my visit, I found the overall experience to be a bit mixed. I ordered the laksa, and while it was decent, it leaned more towards the sweet side, lacking the tangy and spicy punch that usually defines a great bowl of Penang laksa. It felt rather mediocre compared to other versions I’ve had elsewhere.

On a brighter note, the kuih talam pandan was a pleasant surprise — soft, fragrant, and perfectly layered with just the right sweetness. It was easily the best item I had during my visit and showed the kitchen’s skill in traditional desserts.

As for the drinks, they were alright, but the coffee was disappointing — rather flat and lacking in aroma or depth of flavour. I didn’t manage to try their char kuey teow this time, but it’s something I plan to come back for, given its popularity among regulars. Overall, Wan Dao Tao offers some hits and misses, but the kuih talam pandan alone makes it worth...

Wan Dao Tou offers a decent bowl of Assam Laksa, though it leans towards the sweeter side. While the soup is pleasantly free from any fishy smell — which many will appreciate — the noodles are a bit too soft for my liking, lacking the chewiness I usually expect. Still, it’s an overall enjoyable dish.

What really stood out was the vegetarian Char Kuey Teow. At just RM4.50, it’s a rare find these days, especially with that satisfying ‘wok hei’ flavor — smoky and well-executed. Definitely a pleasant surprise.

As for the snacks, the popiah was quite ordinary with nothing particularly special, while the kuih talam was nicely done and worth a try.

The nutmeg drink, however, was underwhelming. The flavor was too mild and didn’t leave much of...

Laksa was soso, could definitely find better ones in Penang.

The shopkeeper and service was outright terrible. I sat there expecting the kakak to come out from her counter to get my drinks ordered but she just sat there drinking her own teh ping and asked me what i wanted from afar.

The boy was there counting money minding his own thing.

He finally attended us and I ordered 1 coconut and 100+ and was charged RM 11. Tell me I'm absurd.

Distasteful. And the sink pasted a notice, "Chew first only then rinse your mouth. Understand?"

Wa biang the shop thinks so great of itself that its your customers that should be grateful to be seated at?

The Michelin sister duo broke their backs to carry your shitty...

I discovered this place from Michelin Food Guide and walked away disappointed with the food. I ordered a bowl of Assam Laksa and fried popiah to pair with my food. The Assam Laksa soup was good with just the right amount of sour, sweet and spice but it lacks in terms of mackerel fish slices, pineapples and the usual toppings. The popiah? Well, you can skipped it as I can hardly taste any sengkuang in it. At RM1.50 a piece, it was a complete ripped off and the popiah was very small too. PS: If you are dining in, do remember to order drinks else you will be slapped with 50 cents No Drinks charge in this kopitiam. Overall, my experience was "meh" at best. I have tasted better Assam Laksa elsewhere
