Wan Dao Tao Restaurant, listed in the Michelin Guide, is a well-known spot that attracts both locals and visitors looking to explore Penang’s famous flavours. With its reputation, expectations naturally run high. However, during my visit, I found the overall experience to be a bit mixed. I ordered the laksa, and while it was decent, it leaned more towards the sweet side, lacking the tangy and spicy punch that usually defines a great bowl of Penang laksa. It felt rather mediocre compared to other versions I’ve had elsewhere.
On a brighter note, the kuih talam pandan was a pleasant surprise — soft, fragrant, and perfectly layered with just the right sweetness. It was easily the best item I had during my visit and showed the kitchen’s skill in traditional desserts.
As for the drinks, they were alright, but the coffee was disappointing — rather flat and lacking in aroma or depth of flavour. What really stood out was the vegetarian Char Kuey Teow. At just RM4.50, it’s a rare find these days, especially with that satisfying ‘wok hei’ flavor — smoky and well-executed. Definitely a pleasant surprise.
As for the snacks, the popiah was quite ordinary with nothing particularly special, while the kuih talam was nicely done and worth a try.
The nutmeg drink, however, was underwhelming. The flavor was too mild and didn’t leave much of...

The shopkeeper and service was outright terrible. I sat there expecting the kakak to come out from her counter to get my drinks ordered but she just sat there drinking her own teh ping and asked me what i wanted from afar.
The boy was there counting money minding his own thing.
He finally attended us and I ordered 1 coconut and 100+ and was charged RM 11. Tell me I'm absurd.
Distasteful. And the sink pasted a notice, "Chew first only then rinse your mouth. Understand?"
Wa biang the shop thinks so great of itself that its your customers that should be grateful to be seated at?
