Today we tried a new dish of Prawn & Garoupa baked in coconut milk! The overall look & taste is quite similar to the Nonya dish Otak Otak … but with an extra Chinese touch! The coconut milk was so fresh and aromatic that my husband had to order extra rice to soak up every bit of the yummy sauce!
We also requested the chef to prepare for us the Chiu Chow specialty -cold threadfin ( 潮州凍馬友魚). It was most delicious especially when served with the famous Chiu Chow yellow bean sauce ! To allow enough preparation time to cool off the fish after steaming, it is best to pre-order this dish a day ahead.
We were also treated to a new appetizer- the Hainan Spring Roll. It was crispy on the outside with succulent fillings including crab meat, minced chicken, cabbage and onions. We loved the special dipping sauce too!
Another new appetizer was Fried Crab Claws! ( 釀蟹鉗)It was amazingly delicious with fresh prawn paste stuffed with chunky fresh crab meat fried with bread crumbs ! Absolutely divine! The cheese baked fresh mussels was yet another new appetiser created by the Sea Queen chef!
Another new dish was the Hong Kong style Prawn Toast (香港懷舊蝦多士) The prawn was embedded on a piece of toast and fried to perfection! Highly recommended!
An all- time favourite Cantonese dish from Hong Kong is steam minced pork with salty fish (咸魚蒸肉餅)which we requested the chef to prepare for us. It was really aromatic and so yummy with a bowl of hot white rice !
We also had the best prawn dumplings at Sea Queen. The lady boss t us that they now use fresh shell prawns versus frozen prawns which gives the fresh texture to the steam dumplings. Trust me, the prawn dumplings here are on par with those we tasted in Hong Kong where we come from. The pork dumplings ( siu mai ) are also done the same way. Be sure to give it a try too !
For dessert, we were treated to a 100% natural collagen- packed jelly prepared from the extract of deep sea fish scales ( 天然美顏魚鱗凍)。According to medical journals, deep sea fish scales are a natural source of superior collagen that is most beneficial to skin elasticity and joint health! The jelly was served with gingered honey which made this dessert even more delicious! This special dessert is a real gem not to be missed especially by ladies!
I have often complained about the poor standard of Cantonese cuisine and dim sums in Penang, but now I am optimistic that my appetite can be satisfied by Sea Queen! 👍🏼😋😋👍🏼👏
Hats off to the lady boss and head chef at Sea Queen who are always friendly, attentive and ready to try new dishes to satisfy their...
Read moreI personally wasn't expecting this but I was quite impressed and enjoyed my dinner throughly. Ate in their vip room with a large group of people. Apparently their huge table can accommodate 18 diners comfortably. It's in Straits quay so parking was plentiful.
The food was generally delicious. The 3 standout dishes were the prawn on bread, tofu and pork ribs. I found the bread and prawn combination delightful. Simple but tasty delicious. The tofu meanwhile had a nice texture with great tasting gravy. The pork ribs could've been a tad bit more tender, I like ribs with meat that falls off the bones, but I can't fault the seasoning. Excellent choice to order here.
I found the veggie curry superbly cooked even though it has a crazy level of oil at its surface, you just need to dig into the lower level for the actual curry but the vegetables were cooked really well. And the pork slices, taugeh and soup were expectedly tasty. Not groundbreaking good but better than average.
The bitter gourd egg and tua pan were only so so. Below my expectation. Average but should be better. I was a little disappointed with the fish though. The meat was strangely hard, either freshness or oversteamed issue, while the taste of the sauce wasn't balanced enough for me.
Meanwhile the dessert was enjoyable. I found the Chinese pancake with red bean filling crunchy, hot from the oven and delicious. The fried cempedak was enjoyable if you eat it before it cools and the longan sea coconut pretty average.
All in all, a nice place for a group dinner. I...
