芳源 Fang Yuan Kopitiam Taman Sentosa — Restaurant in Johor

Ok, 2⭐ seems a tad harsh.

But 3⭐ is benchmark for a place I'll return to, and this won't be one.

The nasi lemak rice was microwaved before serving (can tell from the unnatural 'heat' from within the body of rice).. and the rice itself ain't very lemak in flavor. Malaysia's fried chicken can be unassuming but super, however this is not one of those.. it's very flat/ predictable/ underwhelming, and the sambal, which could be the soul of a good nasi lemak, was also very average. Almost forgot the thin slice of scrambled egg sheet, which felt really patronizing to be included in the dish.

The fried chicken noodles ain't much better. The fried chicken strips were very dry and failed in it's role as the 'main topping' of the dish. The noodles 🍜 was an attempt to be the 猪油拌面 but the restaurant is probably Halal, so the mix was a tad off in flavor.. but loads of vegetables (soaked in oil) which was a plus.

The coffee ☕ was a kopi c kosong, but it was 'very sweet' to me, maybe they forgot to make it...

Been to the other shop at another location. Not too crowded here.

We ordered meesiam with otah, soft boiled eggs, kaya toast and nasi lemak with fried chicken.

Meesiam was nicely fried with the right level of spice. Otah has actual meat in it though I wished it was bigger.

The fried chicken on the nasi lemak is beautiful. Flavourful and juicy. Rice is a little mushy. Would be nice if more grainy. Think it would the rice they use.

Kaya toast was regular. Thin spread of kaya jam with generous chunk of butter.

Soft boiled eggs is a winner for me. Perfectly cooked with runny yolks.

I had Yuan Yang coffee…decent.

The staff generally not proactive and seems more comfortable with Bahasa. I don’t speak Bahasa…when I order at the counter, she just looked at me blankly. Staff are not interactive. They do interact with one another.

Would come again for...

Personal view based on my visit:- Coffee has no coffee aroma and its almost close to tasteless Two soft boiled egg, one is cooked perfectly but one is slightly over cooked Peanut butter toast is decent but I prefer the spread should be more (personal) The nasi lemak is decent (the chicken rendang is rich in flavour and anchovies and peanut is well cooked) but the cracker is soggy and I would prefer the sambal to be cooked slightly more spicy.
