JB Kopitiam Review: 大丰擂茶 Tai Hong Kopitiam, Pelangi, Johor, Malaysia
A Taste of Tradition Delights
Nestled in the heart of Pelangi, Johor Bahru, Tai Hong Kopitiam beckons with promises of authentic Malaysian flavors and a cozy ambiance. With a menu boasting traditional favorites like Lei Cha, wholemeal toast bread, and Nasi Lemak, this quaint eatery holds the potential to transport diners on a culinary journey through Malaysia's rich gastronomic heritage. Let's delve into the experience, shall we?
Ambience: ★★★☆☆ The old traditional wooden chair with marble top furniture, coupled with the aroma of freshly brewed coffee, creates an inviting atmosphere.
Cuisine: ★★★★☆ Tai Hong Kopitiam's menu offers a delightful array of Malaysian classics, promising to tantalize taste buds with each bite. The Lei Cha, a traditional Hakka dish, impresses with its robust flavors and generous serving of fresh vegetables. The wholemeal toast bread, though simple, boasts a satisfying crunch and pairs perfectly with a dollop of homemade kaya (have to eat or while it’s hot). However, the Nasi Lemak falls slightly short of expectations, with the ikan bilis lacking the desired crispiness. Nonetheless, the fragrant coconut rice and flavorful sambal salvage the dish, ensuring a satisfying meal overall.
Service: ★★★☆☆ The service at Tai Hong Kopitiam is warm and welcoming, mirroring the hospitality synonymous with Malaysian culture.
Conclusion: Tai Hong Kopitiam in Pelangi, Johor Bahru, encapsulates the essence of Malaysian cuisine, offering a nostalgic journey through traditional flavors. For those seeking an authentic Malaysian dining experience, Tai Hong Kopitiam remains a worthy contender.

Read moreI wanted to share my recent dining experience at your establishment. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the overall quality of the meal and service.
The food was below average, and the staff seemed inefficient. It took over half an hour to receive a simple order of toast bread, despite the coffee shop being only half full. The dish I received was also not as described in the menu pictures, which was quite underwhelming. Additionally, I was given noodles without chopsticks, and after asking twice, I ended up having to get them myself.
I noticed that the restaurant is mainly run by foreign workers, which isn’t an issue on its own, but I feel it may affect the authenticity of the Malaysian-style food. While the taste was passable, the price seemed on the higher side for the quality of the food.
You can see the picture of the kaya butter toast that they serve versus what was presented on the menu.
The only saving grace is their aircon environment

Read moreThe place is nice. Had a Kopitiam ambience, yet not so messy and much cleaner. Lots I fans to keep the place cool. One negative is the oily slippery floor. Perhaps they should water jet the floor to get rid of oil, as suppose to mopping. The food is very good. Thunder Tea is probably the best in Johor Bahru and beats the Singapore Thunder Tea easily. Besides proper balance condiments on the rice, the super important green tea is very fragrant. Almost seems like freshly made. If you don't like basil or mint, you will not like this dish. The yong tau fu is also great. Lots of flavor and goes well with the Thunder Tea. Finally the ice coffee (kopi peng), very nicely made. Easily...
