I would like to complaint and give some feedbacks as an F&B professional practitioner who dine in completely clueless about what is Canton Boy all about.
I am basically a Chinese food lover and had tried so many Chinese Muslim food before Canton Boy, from the stall, average to another higher standard.
We walked in the restaurant around 9:10pm and welcomed as soon as we reach the entrance. Seated and briefed about the ordering system. They were playing Ical Mosh with a very unpleasant volume for a restaurant. We took about 8 minutes to order, from drinks, starter to dessert (remarked as serve after meal) and the cashier hand over the docket in a second. Everything was smooth until they served us the dessert first, I asked them again to serve after the meal. No apologies given.
We ordered Sparkling Blackcurrant Lemonade and Apple Asam Boi for drinks. Surprisingly, the Sparkling Blackcurrant Lemonade was flat, no soda, no lemon. The Apple Asam Boi was fine. The wrapped paper straw was soaked with water and curry. I asked them to change. No apologies given.
The Dried Shrimp Sambal was served with Shang Hai Xiao Long Bao, the sambal was so good and I have some expectations until the Szechuan Spicy Wonton was served. Xiao Long Bao was fishy, smells like the dumpling was defrosted in a wrong way or did not keep in the right temperature. The skin was too thick. Szechuan Spicy Wonton was okay but not up to the standard where it is actually just Chicken Steam Dumpling soaked with soy sauce, chopped bird eye chili and sliced garlic. I could not expect more and just leave it as it is.
Chicken Wing with Stuffed Prawn was okay. Nothing to brag about until they served is Prawn Rice Roll, also known as Cheung Fun. I was stumble on my first scoop! A medium length hair underneath the roll. I called the waitress with glasses and address the issue. It might be usual for them, but I could not accept how they treat the issue. She just shouted “Weh sini kejap!” in front of our food, calling for help from another colleague. The guy who came to change my straw asked “Kenapa?” and I showed him the hair as he could not see it and straight away took the plate. I know that they took away the plate to avoid us taking any pic as a proof, BUT NO EXPLANATION OR APOLOGIES GIVEN! They just take it away together with my spoon without updating us. Without telling us what they would do.
We are having the Chicken Wings while waiting for update about the Rice Rolls because that is the only edible things on the table. After about 15 minutes waiting, the Rice Rolls was served again on the table without any words. I asked for spoon, “Boleh minta sudu satu?” The waitress just walked away, then came back from my left side with spoon and shouted at the waiter at the right side corner “Ask what they want! I dont understand!” with that annoying face of hers and were giving me side eyes. My anger issue just could not, but another waiter straight away get the spoon and apologize while explaining that she could not understand Malay language. Even if you can’t, WE COULD speak English. You could’ve have asked?
We asked them to serve the dessert. The Salted Egg Lava Charcoal Bao skin was full with dumpling fillings crumbles. I just peeled off the skin, yet the filling was not lava. It was dried. The Mango Pomelo was fine until the second bites. It tastes like rotten fruit.
No other table left to attend, yet no one came to our table to ask about the overall experience. We could not finish any of the food, the cashier came at 9:38pm with no excuse but “Ah, bayar.” while giving us the bill. We just proceed and leave the table. I have decided to ask the cashier about their management team. Again I’m surprised, they have 1 manager and 2 assistant manager, the one seating straight to our table, doing the paperwork was the manager! Wow!
I know it is hard to sustain the business nowadays but, you are in a serious game. Its hard to get manpower nowadays but at least train them properly. Do not let the guest experience unpleasant foods...
Read moreAs a dumplings and dim sum enthusiast, I always make time to explore restaurants offering these dishes. I came across Canton Boy while browsing TikTok for good dumpling spots. Initially, I hesitated to try it due to what seemed like a limited menu, and even considered Dolly Dimsum instead. However, while visiting Ikea Cheras, I remembered Canton Boy was located in Mytown Mall. Rather than drive all the way to KL East Melawati Mall, I decided to give it a shot—and I’m glad I did.
Canton Boy exceeded my expectations. I ordered the TikTok-recommended dishes:
Xiao Long Bao Crystal Har Gow Siu Mai King Scallop Dumpling Crab Meat Spinach Dumpling Crispy Prawn Rice Roll Salted Egg Lava Charcoal Bao
Out of these, my favorites were the Crystal Har Gow and Scallop Dumpling. Some might find these dishes basic, but that’s exactly why I loved them. The simplicity allowed the fresh, springy textures of the prawn and scallop to shine through, perfectly complemented by the chewy, delicate skins.
Next in line were the Spinach Crab Meat Dumpling, Crispy Prawn Rice Roll, and Salted Egg Lava Charcoal Bao. The dumpling had a subtle flavor—neither the spinach nor crab was overpowering, offering a nicely balanced, slightly salty, and juicy bite. The Salted Egg Bao was another highlight, with its fluffy exterior and rich, runny custard filling. Despite all the buzz around the crispy prawn rice roll, it didn’t crack my top three due to its contrasting textures. The smoothness of the rice roll clashed with the abrupt crunch of the prawn filling, which, while enjoyable for some, wasn’t quite to my taste. I prefer the classic steamed rice roll with prawns.
Lastly, the Siu Mai was still delicious but my least favorite. The mushroom flavor was overpowering, making it feel more like a mushroom dish than a light dim sum snack.
Beyond the food, the ambiance of the restaurant was proper and peaceful, despite the soft hum of customer conversations. However, a few visitors gave side-eye when my two-year-old son played with the cutlery, momentarily breaking the harmonious buzz. The staff were well-trained, politely welcoming us and paying attention to details, like offering kids' cutlery and providing a bag for our belongings. However, the service, while efficient, felt somewhat robotic. It would have been nicer if they were a bit more personable, rather than simply directing us, delivering food, and checking...
Read moreFormal Complaint Regarding Staff Attitude at Canton Boy Mytown Restaurant
Dear [Restaurant Manager/Owner],
I would like to make a serious complaint regarding the staff attitude during my recent visit to Canton Boy restaurant.
On 3/10 at around 11:30 am, my group of four people entered the restaurant carrying three large recycle bags of purchases. A staff member guided us to a table for four. We politely asked if it would be possible to add one more chair to the table, so that we could place our bags comfortably without disturbing others.
Instead of responding courteously, the staff’s replies were dismissive: • When I asked about adding a chair, she simply said “this is a table for four.” • When I explained again about the bags and requested a bigger table, she replied that all larger tables were “reserved,” although at that time only 4-5 tables were occupied in the entire restaurant. • When I again requested just one extra chair, she told us to put our belongings on the floor at the counter, which we found unhygienic and uncomfortable. • Finally, when I insisted, she said adding a chair would “block the road,” which was unreasonable given the space available.
I fully understand that lunch hour is a busy time, but our request was not excessive. We did not ask for an extra table, only one additional chair for convenience. What made the experience unpleasant was not just the refusal, but the attitude and expression the staff displayed, which made us feel unwelcome and embarrassed.
We chose Canton Boy expecting good service and a pleasant dining experience, but this left a very negative impression. I hope management can look into this matter seriously, improve staff training on communication and customer service, and ensure that future customers are treated with...
