Let's begin this by accepting that my experience here was down to my own naivety and lack of knowledge - if I'd known what to expect then I would have had a much better time.
With that out of the way - I had a thoroughly bizarre 'meal' here. I knew that I wanted to eat from the charcoal fireplace, so I sat down and - before I had a chance to study the menu - a member of staff has chirped-in to 'help'. He recommends the soup, so I pick a soup. He then turns the pages and starts to point out other items. I say it's okay I'm happy with the soup. The soup arrives and it's really more of a stock - very thin and insubstantial - and it slowly dawns on me what I'm supposed to be doing here. I'm supposed to order the 'soup' and 'something else', then place the 'something else' in the soup so it can cook!
So, the meal was pretty much not a meal at all. Just boiling-hot liquid. Excellent if you're really thirsty.
I imagine that Dragon Door Steamboat doesn't get many foreigners. I only speak English, and the language-barrier here was my major impediment. Having said that - the graphical design of the menu could have helped a great deal in explaining the concept to newbies. A flowing step-by-step guide would have helped a great deal. Instead, we had a brief look at some pictures (without prices) and a staff member who honestly made things worse in their efforts to help. If I'd been left to study the menu I might have puzzled-out the problem, but our diligent waiter was on top of me in an instant. I was not to know peace as I ate, either, as I had service by my side throughout the ordeal - sorry - meal.
I'm not entirely convinced I would have enjoyed myself even if I had possessed the prerequisite knowledge. The prices were a bit high and the atmosphere a bit weird.
In summary - do your research before you come...
Read moreI recently visited Dragon Door Steamboat and the experience was impeccable.
First, the restaurant's decor is antique and charming, giving you a feeling of stepping back in time as soon as you enter. It’s very atmospheric. What surprised me the most was their RM10 lala pot. The portion is really large and very worth the price. Plus, they offer free ice cream and various sauces. With such a reasonable price and so many freebies, where else can you find such value?
As for the ingredients, everything is very fresh and tastes great. I must especially praise their service, which is simply flawless. The staff is very attentive to the needs of the customers. Whenever the soup is almost finished, they promptly refill it, which is very considerate.
In short, Dragon Door Steamboat not only has a great environment and fresh, delicious food, but their service is also exceptional. I highly recommend everyone to...

Next to me is Uncle Chong the owner of the restaurant.
He was kind enough to show us around and I was blown away by the appearance of the place.
He said that on the weekend night time is so crowded that you got to reserve before you can eat there.
Their hotpot uses 100% charcoal to bring out the extra special flavour in their food.
And to top things up further they serve premium haagen daaz ice-cream to cool off the hotness.
