In the harrowing narrow lanes in Kg Baru, there lies a Nasi Padang restaurant that serves delectable North Sumatran food that will get you bloated, say for at least two, three hours later. Not good, eh?
But soon after, you still want more because the food is damn addictive. The taste stays on your palate like opium.
Even after a month, you'll be still talking about the food and tempting your friends to go over to this small restaurant simply called Nasi Padang Kg Baru on Lorong Raja Muda Musa 6, off Jalan Raja Muda Musa and Jalan Raja Uda.
There's hardly parking space in this rather narrow lane. It is as if there's no tract of land unowned in this last Malay-bastion enclave in the city of Kuala Lumpur. So, don't park haphazardly or else get ready to be honked brutally if your car blocks the lane.
I won't say it is the best Nasi Padang I've savoured, But, it is hard to find a really good Nasi Padang in this part of the world. Do not talk or ask about presentation, texture or even the plating but I could guarantee you this Nasi Padang deserves to be savoured by you and that you deserved to eat a sumptious lunch at this joint.
There's always the ordinary in any Nasi Padang menu but here, you'll be spoiled for choice as most dishes are based on mixture of Indonesian spices ie galangal, ginger, lemon grass, coconut rustle (kerisik) and lots of coconut milk.
The dark Rendang Paru (cow's lung?)and Rendang Daging (beef) are just exquisite. Gulai Lemak Rebung (Bamboo shoots) is in deep yellow thick fluid with dominance of cumin and coconut milk that will tear you apart.
But my favourite is the Gulai Lemak Urat (Tendon Curry) which is succulent and soft eaten with white rice and Sambal Ijo or Merah.
There's a lot of tell-tale signs when you are finished. One thing for sure, you'll be licking your fingers to finish off the bits and pieces of the food. And the other, you'll be bloated in satisfaction and confusion for about two or three hours later. You'll be burping gasses by then as the after-taste stays on.
The question you'd probably be asking your dining companions: "What did I just wallop at lunch today?!" And that's good food, I'd say.

Read moreI so very much want to give a 5 star review to this modest but gastronomically outstanding restaurant. However I have a solemn responsibility to my readers and followers to give an objective review, the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Never mind the wrath of my Padang food loving wife.
Here goes. Food : 5/5 Ambience : 3/5 Ouch! Accessibility: 4/5 Cost : 4/5 Service : 4/5
There, I've done it. The Nasi Padang array of dishes is mouth watering. For a Nasi Padang dish to deserve to wear the medal of honor as a true blue Sumatran delicacy it has to delicately balance the tastes of saltiness, sweetness, sour, creaminess and the undefinable umami taste. That should be enough to send any pseudo chefs running out the door while pulling his hair out. 5/5 it definitely is.
Ambience. Due to its space limitation, it does not have the luxury of truly expressing itself.like a peacock with its feathers tied down. Thus 3/5.
While it is by the road, it can be more correctly described as being on the road. There is absolutely no space between the shop and the street. Period. The saving grace is the availability of a parking lot beside the restaurant. The numerous feeder roads, writhing through the ethno-centric Kampung Baru area lends extra credit to the shop access-wise giving 4/5 score.
Cost is quite reasonable considering the scrumptious spread. Expect to spend about RM20 per pax. Ikan siakap Langkawi, Eat Your Heart Out! 4/5
Lastly, service. The shop's assistants are suitably placed at various spots to help the customers. Speed of delivery is not a problem since customers fetch the dishes themselves. Just don't expect tuxedo clad dotting waiters, then you won't be disappointed. 4/5
