I have mixed feelings about our recent visit.
Living not far from this café, we used to come very often—either for breakfast or just for dessert—because of the good selection of vegan cakes.
Some time ago, new management took over, and the place has been slowly going downhill. The most charming seating area at the back, with a cute little library, is now closed off (walled up). The main dining hall is in urgent need of renovation—just look at the walls, ceiling fans, etc.
The staff is friendly but clearly unfamiliar with vegan options. I emphasized several times that we are vegan, and although they seemed to understand, their actions said otherwise. The lady who took our order even asked if we wanted fish sauce with our spring rolls. Then, when I asked how many vegan meatless balls came with the dish, she didn’t know and had to check with the other staff members. After a brief discussion, they told us there would be four balls, but only three were served.
Our favorite pumpkin soup—the main reason for our many returns—was far too spicy this time. Has the chef changed, or was the recipe altered?
They still had a couple of slices of vegan cake, which we ordered. I also asked for a matcha latte with oat milk. The matcha latte arrived, but the taste was very off. I double-checked with my husband, who had placed the order, and he confirmed he had specifically requested oat milk—as shown by the extra charge on the bill.
After the meal, I asked the staff about the milk used in the matcha latte. After checking among themselves, the barista admitted that it had been made with regular cow’s milk instead of oat milk.
To their credit, the staff reimbursed us for the oat milk charge.
Since the extra seating areas are now closed, the main dining hall has become very noisy, especially when large groups gather and talk loudly.
It’s really sad to see how this once lovely and peaceful neighborhood café is gradually declining due to careless management and...
Read moreHello. Good day!
This was a weird experience and I have an impression that it should be brought on because it made us, as customers, felt uncomfortable. This happened last two days in the café in the air conditioned area. We were enjoying our food and we realized and took notice that there were some construction going on? We understood and did not complain much because it was not a big deal. Then, I overheard one of your staffs, a young man, requested for this female staff to inform the customers about the disruption. At first, I thought it was nothing. That it was a good intention and I just simply ignored it but then when I heard the female staff said, "you're the manager, you should do it." something like that, I was shocked. At first I thought it was simply rude but then I noticed she was doing something behind the bar. Out of nowhere the manager said something that was truly disgusting because me as a woman myself hated the way he used his tone and trying to show his toxic masculinity. "I can fire you anytime." yikes. I do think the girl was being rude, too but to respond back with that statement shows how childish a man can become because of his so-called power. Some of the other customers were looking and were shocked at the respond. And I, myself was a café owner and I think it is more appropriate for the supervisor or the manager to inform the customers of anything instead of our staffs who needs to do other works in terms of preparation and making the food.
Your staffs need more teamwork than ever. And try not to argue or have a duel in front of the customers. We came just to enjoy your food and coffee. Not to hear your staffs bickering. Take it somewhere private at...
Read moreVery very disappointed with the waiter (John) and manager (Steve). Went there today at 8am for breakfast with family and we ordered vegan breakfast without onion and garlic. My husband made the order at the counter with john and requested vegan breakfast without onion and garlic. He confirmed that the food has no onion and garlic. We waited almost 20 minutes for the food. Once it was on the table, the waiter told us not to eat first and to wait for him until he confirms with the chef if its allium free (without onion and garlic). We waited for another 5 minutes and he told us that unfortunately the food on the table has onion and garlic. When we asked him why didn’t he confirm with the chef first before ordering, he gave us excuse that the chef was not around so he asked from other staffs. Then he started suggesting non vegan food as substitute even after mentioning that we are vegans. My husband was not happy at all and he asked if he can speak with the manager. The manager took his own sweet time drinking coffee and finishing his breakfast and chatting with the waiter before attending to us (glass door). We had a 2 year old kid with us and we wasted almost an hour here in this cafe by the time. So, the manager came to us and defended his waiter because he was a new staff!!! Wondering how come a new staff can be at the cashiers counter. Never seen this kind of staffs ever!!! He didn’t know how to resolve the issue or pacify a customer and immediately spoke about refund. In my opinion he did not have adequate experience in f&b and problem solving. This is how good brands get bad name. Miss Li Chan, i hope you will look into this...
