Look, I'mma be biased now. Jun has been my go-to for reliable and consistently good Japanese food, for years. Prices range from working-class to slightly high end, but quality and freshness is maintained, and I always get my money's worth.
Their claim to fame initially is the value-for-money lunch sets, and they have a whole host of mains to choose from, from sushi sets to donburi to ramen, carefully curated so you get a taste of everything in good portions, but still keeping prices reasonable. The practice is kept until today.
Venturing to the regular menu, the choices are so vast, I've probably sampled only 10% of it. My all-time fave is the black tonkotsu ramen, with a rich smoky garlic porky broth that's intoxicating and addictive. And when I can afford it, their sushi/sashimi platters are wondrous, especially if you prefer rarer fishes like tai and kampachi. They will hook you up and get you hooked. Please try the 5 kinds belly sushi... It's next level.
Recently I've taken a liking to their more luxurious/experimental selections as well. Considering 90% of Japanese restaurant menus are the same, the extra goodies are certainly welcome. Of particular note are the foie gras scallop teppanyaki, aburi sushi (lightly-seared sushi) and the ishiyaki (stone bowl) selections. Delicious!
The only thumbs-in-the-middle item I've ordered is the pork tonkatsu, it's a bit too lean and tough. Other than that, my other experiences with them have been stellar.
Jun gets one of my highest recommendations for Japanese food in Ipoh. I've seen them struggle through the pandemic, expand from a single shoplot to two, and recently they've also opened a kaiten sushi restaurant opposite for people looking for fast meals. Very proud of the husband-and-wife owners for what they've...
Read moreDecide to try the appetiser. Chuka Idako--(Octopus) and Chuka Wakame (Seaweed)---- both are good except a bit salty and a bit too cold (like just coming out from the fridge. Salmon Kawa Karage: Fried salmon skin--- really love the crispiness of the fried salmon without the heavy flour like what you get usually in the famous Singapore salted egg fish skin. Except it needs a bit salt to bring up the taste. I will suggest enlarge the portion of myonaise mix to serve as a dip (I try the chilli, not matching it well). Except for the lack of taste, the crispiness of the skin is really first class. Normal chawarmushi--- steamed egg with crab stick and others--- a bit bland but really good value for money. I did not try others as my stomach is so full after this. In summary, one of the best Japanese restaurant in Ipoh and will definitely come back to explore more. Price is very reasonable judging from the quality of cooking. SErvice: Need to improve. Malaysia always misunderstand serving is just put food on the table. It is more than that. Have a chat with customers and find out their opinion about the food is just as important. Keep on...
Read moreAuthentic japanese food in a cooling cosy ambience with an affordable price. Came for lunch and tried their meal set and octopus takoyaki. The meal set was priced from RM19 to RM30. Ordered the tempura meal set (RM19) and request the white rice to be replaced with the garlic fried rice with an additional cost of RM5. The tempura came with 2 prawns, brinjal, sweet potatoe and green peppercorn. Absolutely crispy till the end and the garlic fried rice is a must try as the wok hei and garlicky taste is so overpowering hehe. The sashimi set is priced at RM30 and comes with 5 types of fresh different sashimi mainly octopus, salmon, tuna etc. Value for money as its fresh and portion is good too. The Octopus Takoyaki tasted great and came with 6pcs (small size though) but worth the price as only RM8. Overall a very satisfied experienced to dine here amd definetely will come back again to try other dishes. The bill comes with a 10% service charge and a 6% government tax ya. Really dont mind about the service charge as the price of the food is consider affordable and the services provided by the crew...
