Took some time off on a Friday evening and headed to D’s Wine Bar to try out some wine pairing with Peranakan dishes prepared by @jung.and.co, @chef_onion and @julia_ung_yilin.
First pour is a German Riesling, 2020 Peter Lauer Feils No. 13, dry, stone fruits, balanced acidity and it paired really well with the otak otak.
Second pour is a French Chenin Blanc , 2021 Domaine Arnaud Lambert Brézé Clos de Midi Lieu Dit Saumur, bright, dry, citrus, honey, floral and it serves as a good palate cleanser to the mackerel.
Third pour is a French Viognier, 2021 Jules Desjourney Omar Viognier, restrained, fresh, ripe, very balanced, honey, light dry spices undertones that pairs well with the tsukune (chicken skewers).
We return to a German Riesling with the fourth pour, 2022 Peter Lauer Schongels GG No. 11, similar to the 13 but with a little more fruit but not too much. Some reduction like popcorn and butter.
The fifth pour is a French Riesling, 2021 Achillée Alsace Riesling Sec, dry, precise, elegant, fresh cut young ginger, stone fruits, minerals. It would go very well with a Chinese steamed fish. My WOTN!
The final one is a 2020 Forjas del Salnés Goliardo Tintos de Mar Loureiro, red fruits, pepper, grippy tannins. Opening up well. Better with meaty, fatty dishes like beef steak.
Blind tasted a French Aligoté from Fiona Leroy Bourgogne 2021 vintage shared by @sleepy_dave. Couldn’t guessed it was a Bourgogne Aligoté as it is complex, saline and had a lot of ripeness like from warmer climate.
We close the night with a 2016 Grappa Barili di Sassicaia by @anthonylkk. Clean, vanilla, oak.
Propre,...
Read moreWe are from the USA and in anticipation of celebrating our anniversary during our trip to KL, I researched restaurants with great wine lists. I'm a lover of wines from small producers in France and Italy so I was very pleasantly surprised to find D's. Their focus is on Burgundy and Grower Champagnes, with some great options from Italy and Germany so I was very excited to find them.
On the night of our 20th anniversary we enjoyed a wonderful 6-course menu, a fascinating grower Champagne and an excellent bottle of Gevrey-Chambertin. Every course was perfectly balanced, complex and above all, delicious. The knowledgable staff assisted us in picking the wines as they were from growers I wasn't familiar with.
Thank you D's for a memorable night. I wish I lived in KL. Honestly, I wish I...
Read moreVisited on 15/9 — although their kitchen was closed, the boss went the extra mile by getting us the menu from the restaurant next door (Farm to Plate) and had the food brought over. Service was top-notch! The wine selection recommended was spot on, and the way she explained the texture and complexity of each wine in simple terms made it so easy for us to choose what suited our palate. A truly thoughtful and...
