If there's a restaurant where great food matches the good personalised service of the owners, this must be the place.
This restaurant is managed, owned, and operated by a few young men, and i can not give enough accolade to their attentive-ness in the front of the house.
Each time we visit the restaurant, they have managed to spark my palate and ignite my interest in their food. Hands down, this has to be one of my favourite go-to Szechuan food places.
The Chef is very crafty with his use of peppercorns, which is signature to any Szechuan cooking.
In MODU, you will never get a feeling that your tongue is on fire, and it is all about the heat and fire of the peppercorns. The Chef here has perfected the balance. Just try the simple dish of Stir-Fried Chicken with Chili and pepper ('lat chi kai')...you will still taste the succulent fried chicken and you wont feel overpowered by the peppercorns.
You must also try their Roast Fish with Pickled Cabbage....the taste is simply irresistible and you wont be able to stop. The best part is....your stomach won't feel as if you swallowed a nuclear rod.
Another dish you must not miss out is the Preserved Egg Salad....well not really a salad but the 'pei tahn' is lightly glazed with a sauce, obviously with peppercorns, and believe you me that you can just wolf down a bowl of rice just with this dish. The sauce is simply yummy! Then again who wouldn't unless you are not a lover of chinese preserved eggs aka 'pei tahn'.
I have tried all the Szechuan food restaurants in this locale and MODU easily stands out head above shoulders. The guys who own and run this restaurant totally deserve their huge uptick in patrons from the surrounding community. They personally attend to each table and their serving staff is well trained and courteous.
I have followed this restaurant from the first week they opened some time back and they have certainly made it.... looking at the crowds especially at the weekends.
MODU has evolved to be a restaurant where the focus is on food and not some razzmatazz glitzy PR driven enterprise. I like this restaurant and they guys definitely deserve our high praises for curating the taste and attentive service....and NO I am not paid for this review. We paid for our own meal....and it was reasonable priced at that!.

Read moreThey'd declared from the onset that they were a sichuan- shanghainese restaurant And of course they ( quitely displayed on their menu), had those Mala speciality dishes, hot or not remained to be tried, we had a last minute order for a tea smoked half chicken at rm 38.80. A preserved mustard with veggi, a braised spare rib dish which turned out slightly under cooked leaving us with a very slight bitter taste. As for the braised rib meat, it was tough, chewing and oddly sweet, which I gathered was a shanghainese taste., the tea leaves smoked chicken hasn't any smoked taste or flavour. Wed spoke to the young person in charge noting that their place was once a regular mowed rice restaurant but had now altered to a Chinese restaurant. Having inquired further they re now into heating pre cooked dishes.
Despite a wonderfully presented wall pictures of all their dishes, most are precooked except for those Mala soup dishes. Their portions were notably small and offered non of those southern dishes typical of gyangzhou. Since the eatery had few customers his table service was attentive. It is rather difficult to describe theur style of food served. Was told by the head reserver that theur dishes were toned down in term of spiciness. So it isn't a real typical shanghainese restaurant per se but adjusted to our msian palates, which they now cater to precooked good. That only requires heating up before serving. May be its their way to costs savings. To put it simply, it didn't live up to my personal expectations. Do note our meal costed rm 92, which came with a free veggi soup ( which changes everyday) for 2 persons. Deemed this eatery is more suited for daily office...
Read moreFood tastes great. This restaurant mostly serves shanghainese-sichuan dishes but there are also some cantonese dishes to cater to local palates that can't handle too much mala peppercorns. The dishes have a home-styled cook feel to it albeit China-style. Free dessert is provided too. Atmosphere wise, it is a simple restaurant without much fancy deco. Overall the food is great.
Service is excellent and the pace of serving dishes is fast. I don't recall having to wait more than 10 minutes after you placed your order so that's good.
I counted there are a mixture of big and small tables totaling 9 so during peak hours (dinner time) you might have to wait for a table unless there is reservation. Street parking is available (chargeable on weekdays daytime, but free at night and on weekends).
Overall highly...
