Hidden in one of Valletta's narrow streets, off the tourist beaten track, il-Horza is a little restaurant with a big heart. It delivers a dining experience with well prepared food that is beautifully presented and accompanied with great wines from their cellar.
Upon arrival, il-Horza immediately gives you a warm welcome. The place is small and quaint, split over two levels. The staff are friendly and helpful whilst the owner, who doubles as the chef, is a massive character with a lot of passion for good food.
The cuisine at il-Horza is typically Mediterranean. The menu gets changed often, depending on what is fresh and in season. It will normally include a handful of tasty starters and pasta dishes as well as various meat options for main courses which are always served accompanied with baked potatoes and grilled vegetables. Pork and beef are staples at this eatery.
I recently visited with my wife and the chef prepared for us a splendid 5-course dinner. It was intended to be a tasting menu but the portion sizes were very generous indeed. The food was simply amazing and incredibly tasty! I highly recommend trying the rabbit, a traditional Maltese dish that's prepared to perfection. The flavors were rich and satisfying, making it a standout on the menu. For dessert, the semifreddo and vanillin were both beautiful and delicious, rounding off the meal on a high note.
What truly set il Horza apart is the hospitality. The chef and owner was exceptionally friendly and took the time to help us with the menu. We visited during a quieter time, which allowed him to share fascinating stories about his recipes, the history of Malta, and the origins of his restaurant. This personal touch made our dining experience all the more special.

The restaurant has just reopened under new management a few days ago, and it already delivers excellence. Every dish we tried was superb – the rabbit, the octopus, the smoked duck carpaccio, and the chicken Wellington were all perfectly prepared and beautifully presented.
Congratulations to the whole team for achieving such high quality so quickly. And on top of the food, don’t miss the view of the old underground well from the lower dining room – a truly unique curiosity in Valletta.
