Wow. I really thought I found a gem but was extremely disappointed.
As a wine lover, I was excited by the possibility of tasting different Mexican wines by the glass. This is what other reviews described. The outside advertises glasses of wine for $90.
When we arrived, the person working was so unhelpful. I'm guessing it was not the owner as she struggled to suggest any wines to us or use the materials (coravin). We tried in our best Spanish to explain we were ready to try different Mexican wines but they only seemed to have Portuguese wines open. We don't speak great Spanish, and she didn't speak English, but we would have appreciated her at least trying in slow Spanish. Instead she barely said anything. They had 2 red Mexican wines opened and available by the glass. We chose one and asked for 2 glasses.
One bottle was open - she was unable to tell us how long it had been opened but we took a chance as it was with a Coravin. She served us the first glass, and then told us there was only enough for a half glass. She did not want to open another bottle of the same wine, and offered us a completely different wine. It was a bit awkward, but we said OK.
We had our first glass while waiting around 5(?) minutes for the next. The first glass of wine was practically vinegar. The person serving had to call a colleague to help with the Coravin and change the capsule. We spoke with her about the issue and she agreed to open the new bottle. She wanted to mix the remaining wine from the previous bottle with the new one - we insisted it wasn't a good idea and eventually explained that the wine that had been opened had oxidized too much and was no longer good.
It was an EXTREMELY awkward encounter and disappointing. We ended up paying 400 pesos (would have been 800 pesos for a bottle), one glass that we left because it had gone bad. No one warned us about this.
Even though I love wine I'm usually not that difficult. If it's not to my liking, it's not to my liking. But the minimum would be to serve drinkable wine and be helpful and know how to use the materials in the shop. But please do not offer wines by the glass if it's not actually...
Read moreSuch a gem wine spot! This place has great vibes, the owner is very friendly and super helpful and I appreciated the quality stemware used and the AC is nice and cold in there.
I went there THREE times during my seven day stay. It’s a nice relaxing spot for a night cap. She also sells mezcal and individual beers so all can enjoy this chic spot.
Based on some other reviews I don’t understand why there is less than a 5 star rating. The place is clean, has AC and a great atmosphere. I don’t speak Spanish and the employees speak good English and if they don’t, pull out your phone and use google translate. You’re in another country, it’s not their responsibility to know your language.
If you want a taste of something, just ask, Lou is more than accommodating! I can’t wait to go back to Bacalar and this will definitely be one of my first stops. Thank you for making our trip even...
Read moreNot happy with the pricing trick. Big written marketing on the wall: "wine by glass 90 pesos". I asked for a rose and told the woman I was happy I could finally have a rose in mexico. Did not have a choice out of different once but got a nice rose. My mom asked for a dry white. She said we have mexican and portugese, she choice mexican. We ended up paying 130 per glass and a super small glass more like half a glass as well. "price per glass was decided by the wines bottle price" she said. So not by the big door sign. We do not mind paying the price but one could have mentioned this instead of marketing a price huge on your door and just randomly pooring something else. Nice wines but not nice trick and beer brand tables and chairs didnot suit the "wine bar"...
