Checked out this place on a whim during the Thursday Night art walk. Just outside El Centro which made for a quiet oasis away from the crowds. We were greeted right away by Pepe, one of the owners who introduced us to the specials for the evening. He also told us about the history of the family-run restaurant and explained that the recipes were his grandmother's, and that everything was cooked to order.
We ordered the Cadillac Margarita, guacamole appetizer, sea bass/shrimp special, a couple sparkling waters, and the chile relleno special.
2 mineral waters: 45 pesos/$3 USD each.
Cadillac Margarita: 300 pesos/$16 USD and BIG, served on the rocks. My husband said this was one of the best he's had and the presentation was a show in itself! The Grand Marnier float was added tableside which was a nice touch.
Guacamole: 200 pesos/$10 USD. Served in half an avocado shell. I don't know how they do it, but it was basically tons of pure avocado with a nice consistency, seasoned perfectly and topped with cotija cheese, with tomato & onion salsa served on the side (we mixed it in). There was so much we even took some home. The chips were refilled at no charge and were fresh and homemade. We will be dreaming about this guac for a long time!
Sea bass special: 550 pesos/$30 USD. Sea bass (catch of the day) topped with garlic shrimp and a side of mashed potatoes and steamed veggies (however I heard a table next to us order rice & beans as a side instead with no issue). The special also included tortilla soup and a glass of red or white wine. The portions were more than adequate! My husband loved the meal and said the garlic shrimp was his favorite part of the dinner. Sea bass was seasoned and cooked perfectly.
Chile relleno special: 550 pesos/$30 USD. Chile relleno stuffed with your choice of shrimp, chicken, or beef, served with mashed potato and steamed veggies (this special did not come with soup or wine, however I did add extra meat so the pricing made sense to me - it was probably a little cheaper if I ordered as-is). This meal was the real show-stopper for me: a giant, grilled (not fried!) chile relleno stuffed with shrimp and cheese, topped with a perfectly sweet and spicy mango sauce. I also added skirt steak which was served underneath the chile, so I was able to cut it into bite size pieces and get a little bit of everything in each bite - perfection! It was spice, smoky, creamy, and the steak was cooked perfectly medium-rare. I literally NEVER finish my food, but I cleaned the plate on this one!
Total: 1700 pesos/$95 USD, plus tip.
Honestly, we perused a few menus (and have eaten before) in El Centro, and this was a very fair price for the amount of food and amazing service we got! We will definitely be back, and are excited to see they also offer breakfast options which look equally delicious. Don't miss this place on your next trip to San...
Read moreWanted to meet friends that live in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose. Wanted to try something new. Reviews were either good or bad but mostly good. That being said we are tourists but our friends are locals and speak the language. In fact, one of our friends was born in San Jose.
Typical of many tourist areas pressure is high on sales by staff. So fudging on what you order is sometimes what they do. Being there with a friend that is from there I didn’t expect it to be as obvious.
We sat at a table for 6. We asked for guacamole and chips for the table. Their translation was one for each side of the table at $10 each. For drinks, 2 margaritas, one beer and 3 lemonades. No prices on the menu for drinks.
For dinner we each ordered something different. 3 of us were happy with the meal and other 3 felt it wasn’t bad but not great. With dinner we added 1 more margarita and 2 beer. Again drink prices are not on menu. Margaritas are in rocks glasses so they are smaller.
I asked for the bill and this is where the prices become an issue. As I already mentioned they doubled our guacamole order making it $20 or 200 pesos for the appetizer. The total bill for our group of 6, one being a 7 year old was 3100 pesos. I added up our food with prices on the menu including the appetizer and it was 2000 pesos. That means 3 margaritas, 3 beers and 3 lemonades was 1100 pesos. That is over one third the bill. They say it’s because they were serving top shelf. I happened to catch a photo and they were pouring Don Julio but we didn’t decide top shelf, they did. So I’m guessing margaritas over 40 pesos each and beers 20. Even at that it still seams excessive. So our advice is be clear what you are ordering with drinks and appetizers.
The staff all had smiles and were very nice. They all thanked us as we left and it felt they truly appreciated our business. I just hope they can be a little more straight forward with pricing in the future. Would we come back in the future, probably not because there are so many great options in the area. I won’t say don’t try it but will say be clear on price...
Read moreFamily owned and operated. Very personal service. Pepe gave us background on what the specials for the day were and made solid recommendations on a family style dinner. The fresh fish, seafood and traditional meals were prepared and centered for the table. The kids had a separate table and there own personal prepared testimonial meals. The appetizers consisting of the seafood ceviche, guacamole and shrimp were great starters.
The main courses were served with the background for each dish and preparation.
The drinks needless to say were hand crafted and high quality. The service staff were excellent reps for the establishment where the owners and proprietors greeted and met us at the table.
This place looks very sedate from the front as it is next door to the hotel outdoor dining place. This place is FANTASTIC and not foe the routine tourist who wants “Mexican food” but rather those who want a dining experience.
Our family was there for 2 hours from drinks, appetizers, diner, dessert and the post meal “family game “ at the table of bingo squares with Mexican words and pictures card deck to engage the entire family in a family dining experience.
Our kids enjoyed the experience and had there own Table.
I highly recommend this restaurant for both the quality and uniqueness of the food as well as...
