I stayed across the street from this wonderful little place in Cancun, and while I'm not vegan, I do eat vegan/vegetarian quite often. I was happy to find an alternative to the usual fare (although delicious as well) and eat a little healthier.
I ate here twice, both times getting the daily special: un agua fresca, una sopa, una ensalada, una entrada y unpostre for 120 pesos. A great deal!
Translation: A "fresh water" - which was water with fruit in it and a very refreshing way to start; a soup (I had both the vegetable and the lentil -- go for the lentil); a small salad with lettuce and shredded carrots and beets; an entree (I had the stuffed calabaza and then a stir fry of sorts, both yummy) and a small dessert - a lemon creme with cookies.
There's not a large staff, the pandemic took its toll. But Goretti, the waitress and Carlos, the owner are nice and attentive. I had a long conversation with Carlos (as time permitted) and I feel like I made friends. I even got a hug when I left from both of them.
If you are looking for something different or are vegan/vegetarian and need a place to eat in Cancun because most places are very meat-oriented, I highly recommend giving Heribvoro a taste. Conveniently located on one of the main drags of downtown Cancun,...
Read moreWe love everything about El Herbivoro. I really can't do it justice with one review. The food is SPECTACULAR. All of it is vegan and most of it complies with a WFPB diet. I'm used to greasy vegan food in the US, but this was not the case with El Herbivoro, yet it was the tastiest food I've ever had. We ate here every day of our trip. I tried all of the smoothie bowls, and my family loved multiple things on the menu, but the gringa taco, tofu scramble, and "ice cream" cake were a few of their favorites. While the food was absolutely amazing, the staff was by far the best part of el Herbivoro. Carlos, the owner, is multilingual and both he and Goretti (who also speaks English) helped us figure out where to take the bus and which trips we would like the most. They also didn't just make us feel welcome-- they feed the stray animals that wander in, even the baby doves!
I felt like we really got to know them in the short time that we were there. We were all sad to leave Cancun, but have decided to definitely return so that we can see our friends again. This is truly a very special place with very...
Read moreMy husband came here to get us some hot drinks to take out and the golden milk I got had a thick layer of grease over the top of it and tasted really unlike any other golden milk I’ve ever had, as it tasted like a kind of dense margerine-y cake? I took it back and asked if all was okay with what went in there and requested a refund and I was literally just one word answered and ‘no’d by an employee who wasn’t at all sympathetic and just took my drink away to the kitchen. He then came back to say it had coconut oil in it. But why? Golden milk doesn’t have coconut oil in it, and it was awful, that’s why it was returned? I just feel if you’re going to change a recipe, specify it on the menu so people will know to avoid it? I don’t really leave bad reviews or ever return food or drinks, but it was just so sad that the service here was so poor and even though I returned the drink I couldn’t just get my money back. I don’t understand Cancun as it seems here you just get ripped off for fairly basic stuff just because...
