Big Fish | Comida Tradicional Holboxeña — Restaurant in Isla Holbox

I am beyond disappointed with this meal. I simply do not understand the positive reviews. This is up there with one of the worst meals of my life at a restaurant, and we actually had to send the tuna tostadas back because they were a really bad colour, texture and taste. I also saw people mention below they got food poisoning and given the state of the fish, it was not fresh. The waiter eventually admitted that it wasn’t in fact fresh, and it’s raw fish! Also very expensive too, at 250pesos for two small tostadas!

On top of all of this, the food took one hour or more to come. We were offered some dry chips with no dip as a “compensation” after complaining multiple times. The restaurant was almost empty and it was 9pm so it looked like they just forgot our food!

And lastly, the fish we ordered came with “risotto” rice which was just white rice mixed with thick yellow cheese. The texture and taste was like something you’d get if real risotto was in the fridge for a month or more. It was our first meal in holbox so we are very very sad this was our welcome...

Go here! If you want to get food poisoning and spend four to five days doing nothing but sitting on the toilet and throwing up. I didn’t eat anything all day so this was my first meal - I ordered the fish - and within 20 minutes of finishing my stomach felt a little funny. A few hours later I woke up throwing up. They showed me the fish before - it looked rigid and hard. I should’ve thought twice but, to get ill from eating fish on Holbox island felt impossible. But they manage it at Big Fish. As long as they make their money off the tourists! Do yourself a favour and stay clear of this place; you won’t regret it like I regret...

I went there with a group of friends. Service was really good, cocktails on point and food was excepcional. Although they don't have any vegetarian meals, they offered few options and I have to admit, risotto with grilled veggies and mushrooms was one of the best meals I had in whole Mexico (I'm 2 years in here now). All other group members were super happy with their food also. We even stayed later on for drinks only. Espresso martini like in London! Top! Prices were quite regular for holbox.
