I met a these two girls while traveling solo in Holbox Island who raved about Raices, the beach restaurant. I joined them for dinner one night and really enjoyed their giant seafood dish - supposed to be for two people but with three of us, it was more than enough and we were all full by the end of the meal. That was quite the memorable meal with all that fresh seafood. The sunset show they had for their guests at the beach was very interesting, an indigenous dance ritual of some sort.
The only reason I can only give this place three stars is that their alcohol is watered down. I'm aware this is quite a strong statement, but after we each had four tequila shots, we left that place stone cold sober. Now, we weren't there to get drunk, and I am not a big alcohol drinker myself. Two shots of any kind of alcohol, or even one beer or one glass of wine will have me drunk already. After the second shot, we expected to feel a little something. Nope, not even after the third nor the fourth one. We left that place sober as can be, and we really wondered what we just paid for.
Great for food and sunset, but go out for...
Read moreinexplicably, this place thinks it's acceptable to play music full blast from about midday and for the rest of the day on the beach, meaning anyone within a few hundred metres has no choice but to hear it. basically, ruining what would otherwise be peace, quiet and tranquility for lots of people who have come on holiday for exactly that. don't get me wrong, i like music, including some of the stuff that gets played here, but not at full volume during the day, with the permanent thump of bassline making reading or anything else relaxing really difficult to concentrate on. to top it off, as soon as it gets to the evening, a far more appropriate time for loud music, it all stops!
anyway, surely in the interests of this place and those nearby to do something about the issue as it appears to be generally bad for business. saw several people, including a few with young children, just get up and leave in bemused exasperation soon after the music started. we're actually checking out of a nearby hotel as a result and certainly won't be returning to this part of holbox....
Read moreThere are some meaningful pluses and minuses for Raices Slow Food. Note that there are 2-3 restaurants on Holbox that use the "Raices" name. On the Plus, this restaurant sits on the beach area right in front of the Holbox Letras. Particularly at night, the restaurant ambiance is outstanding. The lighting and decor are a real draw. The owner-manager was very personable and stopped by our table a couple of times. However, our waiter forgot (several times) things we requested. Our fish was "over fried" and hence dry. The most disappointing part was how the bill was handled (see image). For one, the bill was added wrong to their favor. The amount was not significant, but the sloppy-ness in combination with a deceptively, less than transparent tip inclusion was concerning (see the non descript mystery line item on image). I would suggest passing on dining at...
